Class of 2019 Senior Issue

Aaron Phung is a genius on the court and in the science lab. He smashes hoops while playing varsity basketball and kills it in Advanced Studies Organic Chemistry. However, one can not forget that he is also an explorer with a thirst for adventure and danger. He founded the first Pokemon Go Club on campus and has met many new friends on his expeditions. Aaron is also a music fanatic; he plays and runs the Piano Club at school and listens to K-Pop. You might even find him watching good anime. Among all his loves and passions, Aaron wants to go to medical school and become a doctor. He is ready to tackle his dream at University of California, Los Angeles, and although he will miss the close community Webb has created for him, he will not hesitate to strive.

Aaron is a guy who always brightens my day.

If you have ever spoken to Adrian Leong, you have heard him say, “It’s subjective.” Beyond his surface of being a K-pop enthusiast and lowkey introvert, his catchphrase is quite telling of who he is. To him, living to the fullest is doing whatever makes you genuinely happy and agreeing to disagree in order to be true to yourself. For Adrian, it has been spending time with friends ordering food and playing games, watching shows like Rick and Morty and Suits, and developing a true passion for arts – beyond just a grade. Some of his favorite moments have been eating pizza by the beach in front of the sunset on Unbounded Days and getting turnt at Theme Nights. When he has free time, he likes to recharge his “social battery” and read The Stranger by Albert Camus. Inspired by AdvSt. Existentialism & the Human Condition, Adrian will be studying Philosophy at Occidental College next year.

Beneath his quiet, edgy, sElfiSh shell, he’s actually quite passionate and cares for his friends. He’s a nut, but he’s a great guy and I’ve been lucky to know Aidz.

If you decide to take a break on a Friday night to hang out with friends in the library after a long week, you will most likely see a tired, sweaty bodybuilder with a sweat-soaked stringer muscle tank and a pair of orange workout shoes signing back in from LA Fitness. Do not confuse him with the Hulk: he is Alex Yeung. Alex is attracted to bodybuilding and actually enjoys grinding towards his goal of becoming a pro-bodybuilder. Other than bodybuilding, Alex enjoys his time at Webb and is thankful for the opportunities to learn about the world in class and meet different people. This fall, Alex will be attending Occidental College because he wants to stay close to his home in Chino Hills. Alex is not worried about the transition since Occidental is a rather small school, and he is ready for the new challenges. In the future, Alex would love to be a professional bodybuilder or do research about nutrition in order to help other bodybuilders.

Alex eats as slow as he runs and writes as fast as he thinks. Pretty slow man overall, but he’s still my guy.

You may know Allison Lilley from her laugh around campus or her name on the Webb swim record board. She is a triple-threat: a day student prefect, an avid co-captain of the swim team, and a dedicated student. However, there is more to Allison than what meets the eye – she has an immense love for her friends, even through their battles for the best roasts. As their designated driver, Allison is constantly taking her friends for boba trips and bantering along the way. When she is not driving around Claremont, she is most likely binge-watching Netflix or rapping along to Cardi B. Allison will miss the warm Southern California sun and her family when she moves to Baltimore, but she hopes to return for graduate school. For now, she is ready to spread her wings as a Blue Jay and major in Molecular and Cellular Biology at Johns Hopkins University in the fall.

Allison is a great friend with good driving skills and awesome music taste. If she agrees to drive you, enjoy watching her rap along to Rich Brian’s songs.

If you do not know Ally Casillas, you may recognize her around campus by her signature hypebeast Gucci or Supreme outfits. At first, Ally may seem quiet, but once you break through her shy exterior, you will enter her world of hilarious Australian accents served with dino chicken nuggets from Rainforest Cafe. On weekends, you can find Ally and her closest friends searching for the trendiest food spots in West Hollywood, curled up in bed watching The Office, or reading the book After. Ally lives by the motto, “suck it up buttercup.” She rolls with the punches and never lets anything or anyone get her down. Ally knows exactly who she is and is ready when someone needs a shoulder to cry on. In the fall, Ally will not be traveling too far away from home; she will be staying in sunny California where she will study Spanish at Chapman University.

You might know Aman Ahmed as the “quiet” senior that hogs Room 3 of the Fawcett Library, but under the surface, he describes himself as, “fun, tired, effervescent, and caring.” After surviving his tenth grade finals despite mixing up two of the test dates, Aman moved from India and began his journey as a Webbie during his junior year. Since then, he has taken on many new hobbies and created many new memories, following the advice he would give to his freshman self: “Don’t wait for things to settle down.” He is a familiar face on stage, performing in plays and musicals without any experience prior to Webb. In the fall of 2018, he spontaneously entered into Club Fair with “Live Japan.” His favorite moments at Webb include people-watching around campus, the 2018 Homecoming, and the sitzprobe – the first run through of the production with orchestra. Next year, Aman will continue exploring his passions, including his potential major, Molecular Biology, at Pitzer College.

A lot of my conversations with Aman don’t really make sense, but they’re by far my favorite conversations. They’re so fun and upbeat, with lots of laughter always.

Andrew Shen is an avid gamer who can be found gaming with his friend Kourosh Ariane (‘19), in the gym talking about games with Dr. Brendan Beikmann, or sleeping, probably dreaming about playing games. He says some of his favorite memories have been his many gaming sessions, particularly his brief pro-career in the Russian shooter game Warface. Some might say Andrew plays too many games, but the University of California, Berkeley disagrees. He will be attending Cal in the fall to study History or Psychology. His interest in the humanities was sparked by teachers like Jessica Fisher and Dr. Kevin Riel, who he says taught incredible classes. Besides academics, he was a four-year member of the tennis team, and a passionate J-Pop fan. When Andrew heads off to NorCal next year, his friends will truly miss his friendly personality, but if they want to hear from him, all they need to do is get online.

Andrew Shen is pretty much the most chill/carefree person you’ll meet. If you ever ask him if he studied for a test or if he’s worried about anything he always responds with 1 word… ‘Nah.’

Anne Lofgren has called Webb her home since the day she was born. Although she grew up on campus as a faculty kid, she has found her own place at Webb as current VWS all-school president, two-year varsity cross country captain, all-around hiking-enthusiast, and VWS Class of 2019’s salutatorian. Her all-time favorite class at Webb has been Advanced Studies Organic Chemistry; this course inspired her to strongly consider majoring in Chemistry in Middlebury College this fall. Bands like 5SOS have gotten her through some rough patches at Webb, but as Anne reflects upon her high school career, she realizes she will never forget the moments that have made her the happiest. During Theme Nights of her junior year, the Class of 2019 charged up Gym Hill to put on a stellar unified and empowering performance. Whether she chooses to major in Chemistry or something totally different, Anne’s dynamic persona will be missed as she leaves home to find a new one in Vermont this fall.

Anne is one of the most reliable and caring people I have ever met. She pushes everyone around her to be the best version of themselves through kindness and integrity. She’s obsessed with Pride and Prejudice and Maggie Rogers, an excellent hiking buddy, and if you get the chance to be her friend you should count yourself as lucky.

A future Sociology major at San Francisco State University, Artem Vardanyan sees himself on top of the world in five years, after he transitions from the study of people into the business world. His mind is packed with resplendent Kanye verses. He is also a fan of self-improvement. Pointing to Eckhart Tolle’s famous line, “What a liberation to realize that the ‘voice in my head’ is not who I am. Who am I then? The one who sees that,” Artem will tell you that mistakes are part of the process of becoming who we are. In thinking through his life, Artem is certain that the coming years will be bright and fulfilling, even if it means seeing all of his friends scattered across the country as they pursue their own dreams. But if there is one thing Artem is confident in, it is that no matter where you trade your individual soccer players, the team spirit that motivates and connects them is a beautiful thing, and will continue to live on.

A great thing can only be done by a great person. I don’t know who Artem will become, a Chief Executive or a talented painter, but I do know that he’s the guy to create greatness.

You may run into Bella Biane in the art room, on the tennis court, or at I Like Pie Bakeshop. No matter where, you can count on her to “live life in the moment, because everything else is uncertain.” She has raised the roof at the 2018 Prom, enjoyed Bridgette Lee (‘20)’s burping numbers on post-tennis trips to McDonald’s, and experienced countless light-bulb moments learning about the environment while jamming out to Tame Impala and Mac DeMarco. Her favorite classes have been Honors Global Sustainability and AP Environmental Science. Sometimes, when Bella is truly savoring the now, she makes bold choices, like cutting her own bangs. Webb will be losing a Claremont native and avid contributor to Art Café when Bella continues her favourite “fun yet daunting” task of figuring out the new at Sarah Lawrence College. Watch out as Bella ventures into the political world in the future.

Ben Chai is class president, captain of wrestling, water polo player, K-pop dancer, Sage Academy tutor, and “a massive cutie,” as his friends would say. While these titles may not all align, they all center around Ben’s philosophy of doing whatever he wants to do and not taking himself too seriously. He loves “joshing around” with his friends, and has made some of his favorite memories hiking Potato Mountain, splashing around in the pool, and sipping on La Croix while hanging out with his dogs. As a big fan of community, Ben has made his mark as a K-pop dancer at Theme Nights and has enjoyed Welcome Back Dances. Next year, he will bring his diverse music taste and love for Yu-Gi-Oh! Duel Monsters to University of Southern California as he explores interests in International Relations, Business, the music industry, and Korean. He will miss dinners at Price Dining Hall with “the homies” and all the fun, hYpe times at Webb.

Ben is an amazing friend, but a horrible driver.

Even if you do not know Ben Martinez, you know who he is. His out-there style and personality make him instantly recognizable around campus: a true Webb icon. He is well known for his endless energy competing for his class at events like Theme Nights or cheering on his wrestling teammates at big meets. But sometimes you need to mellow out, and that is where XXXTentacion, Juice Wrld, and A Clockwork Orange come in for Ben. He has turned his love for music and movies into some of his favorite pastimes; when he is not at school, he is probably at the movie theater or rocking out with his longtime friend Edison Adler (‘19). When he starts school at Pitzer College next year, Ben is not sure that he will be recognized or appreciated as an important individual like at Webb, but with his wild personality and style, he has no need to worry.

Ben is a really intelligent, kind person. I think he should be a therapist, because he’s a great listener and he can give good advice whenever someone needs it.

Bill King. With a name like royalty, he certainly lives up to it – especially on the volleyball court. When you walk into the gym, Bill immediately stands out as he leaps high into the air and forcefully spikes the ball down onto his opponents. Despite being the “King” of the volleyball court, Bill also keeps himself busy as a freshman prefect and admission fellow. On weekends, you can find Bill and his friends eating at the best hot pot restaurants in Los Angeles. Some may describe Bill as “intimidating” and “tough,” but once you get to know him, you get to see his laid-back and goofy personality. As a child, Bill was exposed to the world of business early on as he often listened to his dad’s phone calls. Next year, Bill will pursue his passion for business at the New York University. He hopes that within the next five years, he will be working back in China.

The meaner Bill is to you, the more he likes you.

If you look up the word “ambitious” in the dictionary, a picture of Breckelle Zheng will show up beside it. When she is not doing her school work, Breckelle can be found editing for the yearbook or leading the varsity badminton team as a co-captain. Outside of Webb, she loves to hang out with her friends, or watch The Office, The Walking Dead, and The Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt. After she attends college at Brown University, Breckelle hopes return back to California, enjoying some of the great LA food she got to experience during Unbounded Days last year. She applied to major in Philosophy because she enjoyed Greg Gerken’s Existentialism & the Human Condition, but she is also interested in studying Psychology. Although she is excited for college and a job in the future, she will miss the friends and memories she has made throughout her time at Webb.

Funny in her own way, Breckelle’s true personality does not come out until you get to know her. If you listen carefully, you can hear her somewhat snarky comments in class, often made even better with her ‘silly monkey’ accent.

Have you ever been on campus and heard someone scream “Zao Ye”? It was probably because somebody is passing by Brian Yang. Since his earliest days at Webb, Brian has spent his time playing basketball and video games when he was not tirelessly doing schoolwork. While getting buckets and Victory Royales, Brian has made a wide range of friends, all of whom are fond of his kind and humorous presence. One story that he laughs at in hindsight is when he was playing video games too loudly with Artem Vardanyan (‘19). When an upperclassman complained about the noise, they proceeded to intentionally play their music louder and place a Beats Pill at his doorstep. After Webb, Brian has decided he will take his next step in France for this upcoming school year where he will prepare to attend the University of Southern California the following year to major in Business Administration. In five years, he sees himself continuing his pursuit for a masters degree.

Brian is fun to talk to and hang out with as long as he’s not playing Dota chess.

With her natural talent for finding flaws in arguments, it is no surprise that Bridgid Corbin wants to become a lawyer in the future. Bridgid has participated in debate since she was in sixth grade, and is currently one of the captains of the Webb debate team. Under Bridgid’s leadership, not only did the debate team win the League Championship for the first time in six years, but for the first time in the history of The Webb Schools, the varsity volleyball team won its League Championship as well. Bridgid is also a passionate music enthusiast, who loves everything except for country; she spends a lot of her time jamming out to indie-rock or R&B concerts. As she goes away to college, Bridgid will miss the small school atmosphere at Webb, and the advantage of knowing every one of her classmates and teachers. Regardless, she is excited to study Environmental Policy at the University of California, Berkeley next year.

Bridgid is always looking out for me, even when I don’t want her to.

Brooke Fakhoury lives a life of contrast. She loves to venture on trips to the beach with her friends during the day and find new adventures through a good book at night. At Webb, she is a soft-hearted co-head peer advisor who treats the position as her “baby,” but do not be fooled by her kind ambiance. She is fierce, ready to defend her opinions in casual conversations and classroom environment. She is also loud, whether she is singing country songs at the top of her lungs in the car or shouting lines to the actors of the Webb theatre as the stage manager. Brooke helped her soccer team win championships while keeping a lively attitude, even when she accidentally picked up the ball during a game. Nostalgia for the past and excitement for the future collide; she will miss her hometown, but looks forward to starting college at the University of Richmond.

Brooke is the most dependable person I know. Ask you to meet her somewhere, and she will be there ten minutes early and will have already ordered for you.

Caitlyn Ossa can be found either leading prospective families and students around the school, in the theater, with her Peer Advisor group, or playing water polo in the pool. Caitlyn still thinks back to the bus ride during her freshman retreat, when she formed some of her closest friendships. She does regret breaking a door in Hooper in her freshman year while she was roughhousing; she was stressed because she had to explain to Dr. Jessie Atterholt what had happened then, but now it is a silly memory. On weekends, she prefers to watch a movie with friends or just spend time with her family. She loved her class’s spirit at her favorite event, Theme Nights, but she will always miss the community at Webb. She will not be too far away when she attends Scripps College next year. She plans to take up some extracurriculars, and will major in Biochemistry. She hopes to help people as she wants to study Forensics in her future.

Caitlyn is simultaneously a breath of fresh air and the calm before the storm. She’s adventurous yet motherly, bubbly and kind. She makes you want to burst into song and conquer the world.

Rumor has it that the song “Just Dance” by Lady Gaga may have been written about Catherine Tanidjaja. Catherine loves to dance anytime she can. She has participated in Webb’s dance show since her freshman year, with her favorite being Human, the 2018 dance show. Some of her favorite memories from Webb are choreographing her class’s winning Theme Nights dances. When she is not expressing herself through this artform, Catherine can be found driving around with her friends to relax at local viewpoints or watching Law and Order: Special Victims Unit. She is excited to study Entrepreneurship and Marketing at Babson College, which will allow her to learn more about how to pursue her goal of starting her own fashion company. Although she is looking forward to following her dreams, Catherine will miss classes with her favorite teacher, Kevin Quick, and the tight-knit Webb community along with the connections between the students and teachers.

Catherine’s already on her way to being a soccer mom who drives a minivan and organizes the bake sale… She somehow manages to get everything done, even under immense pressure, and do it with finesse.

Who is Catherine Wu? Did she wear pants under her massive t-shirts in freshman year? Does she regret wearing her hair in a bun for three years? Her Webb career is filled to the brim with funny stories and cherished memories. During Sadies her freshman year, she walked back from the Village at 9:45 p.m.. Once, she threw her socks into a fire to dry on an Unbounded trip. When she is not watching YouTube videos, taking mirror selfies, or making Spotify playlists, she indulges herself at the spa, gets lash extensions, shops, eats, and, sometimes, cuts her own hair. When she moves to Babson College in the fall, she will miss eating pies from I Like Pie Bakeshop and spending time with friends. The front office will be losing one of its most frequent visitors and a big contributor to its year-round bustle.

Three words to describe Catherine: sassy, fabulous, drop dead stunning.

Head peer advisor, former basketball star, debate team captain–these titles can not accurately describe Cathy Yan. However, singing “Old Town Road” with Lexie Freeland (‘19) and Christine Zhang (‘19) in her room, watching The Chilling Adventure of Sabrina the Teenage Witch, and going to Boiling Point and Din Tai Fung for some Chinese food would definitely describe Cathy. After shining on the basketball court for two years, Cathy decided to shift her main focus onto debate as she described herself as “naturally argumentative.” When Cathy is not on campus, she loves exploring mountains and forests nearby with her close friends. This fall, Cathy will be on a brand-new exploration as she is attending Boston College. Even though Cathy has to buy winter clothes, she is excited for the transition and is looking forward to meeting more people. In 10 years, Cathy sees herself working with her father in Shenzhen to fulfill her promise she made to him when he let her study in the States.

Cathy is the friend you call when you’re about to do a mukbang Friday night…or when you need some Chinese connections to get you out of jail.

Born and raised in Chongqing, China, Charlie Chen has inspired others through leadership in a myriad of Webb activities: WSC all-school president, member of the chapel council, admissions ambassador, and head waiter. Besides being an instrumental part of the musical, soccer, and track teams, Charlie is most passionate about running cross country with his pals. His favorite memory from his time at Webb is of Unbounded Days during his junior year: biking along the picturesque California coast with Jim Dahler and Brian Caldwell. He will dearly miss the nights spent watching basketball while eating home-cooked food with fellow seniors in Mr. Dahler’s house. While Charlie enjoys working with numbers, he prefers its real-world applications over the pure math concepts. Charlie will cultivate his zeal for math this fall, heading across the nation to the University of Pennsylvania to major in Mathematical Economics.

I can always count on Charlie for the best advice. I don’t know how I will survive senior year without his jokes.

After finishing a block of Advanced Studies Existentialism and the Human Condition, Christine Zhang’s favorite class, she might have Chinese food and watch Grey’s Anatomy. Throughout the years, Christine met her best friends at Webb. Not only did they become part of her weekend routine, but they also motivated her to work hard and achieve her goals. Looking back, Christine feels like transferring to Webb her sophomore year was a huge change for her; the new environment and new friends made it hard to adapt. In the future, Christine is not really worried about anything since all of her close friends will be in Boston with her while she attends Boston College. The only thing Christine is going to miss is the SoCal sunshine, which is why it is her goal to get tanned before she takes off to the East Coast. Christine is confident that she will have the same amount of energy and effort in her next phase, while making time to help as many people as she can.

I’ll always be grateful for our spontaneous adventures and Friday night drives, she is always there when you need her the most and she never fails to make me laugh until I cry.

Who is enthusiastic, always there for you, and has a million-dollar smile? Obviously, Cindy Zhang. Serving as vice-chair of the Dorm Council, co-captain of the varsity tennis team, and a stellar academic, Cindy has accepted every opportunity that Webb has given her. Cindy’s favorite memory at Webb was during an extremely stressful tennis game. She was struggling at first, but then all of her teammates cheered her on and supported her, which helped her win the game and show the other team true Webb spirit! Living in Beijing and Hong Kong has given Cindy a great appreciation for Asian cuisine, which is why she typically spends her weekends discovering new restaurants throughout Los Angeles. During the week, she is either hard at work or bonding with her fellow South Hutch freshmen. Influenced by entrepreneurship summer camps over the years, Cindy has decided to study Business at Emory University next year. After college, Cindy dreams of taking over her family company and working with her parents.

Cindy’s the person who will run up Gym Hill for a friend because of a text.

Claire Wagner likes to make her own path, through doing what she loves and not caring about what others think. Claire started the diving team at Webb, even though she is no longer a part of it because she kept getting sick from cold morning practices. She still enjoys staying involved in Webb athletics in sports broadcasting. This afternoon activity gives her more time off to listen to her favorite indie music or reread the nostalgic Harry Potter series. Claire does not regret any part of her time at Webb, although she does find it amusing that she tried to play volleyball her freshman year. Claire will miss spending time with her friends at Webb when she is attending the University of San Diego, and she hopes to stay in SoCal afterwards. She plans to either study History or Psychology because she is fascinated with learning about the reasons why people act the way they do and the historical contexts that influence the modern world.

[She] once told her mom, while dress shopping at the ripe age of two, ‘You can buy it but I won’t wear it.’ She also loves The Chainsmokers… I need to out her for her societal disgrace.

At 6’0” with a magnetic personality, Cody Murray-Bruce is hard to miss. A leader on WSC Honor Council, his need to serve others will be missed as he looks towards Northwestern University. “Caring, funny, and intelligent” are just some of the adjectives Cody uses to describe himself. An avid fan of cartoons such as South Park and Family Guy, Cody hopes to follow in his dad’s footsteps and study television and film. In the future, Cody hopes to become the creator of the next best selling television show in America. His banter in and out of the classroom is something that has brought so much light to Webb and will continue into wherever the future takes him. Although he will not continue playing soccer at Northwestern, his fondest memories were of junior year soccer, the close friends he made, and how far they went in the season.

Cody is far from normal – he’s ingenious and always pulls off what seems impossible, but he also thought Everest was in America.

When Connor Walker is not setting the mood in technical theatre, you might find him watching his favorite movie, Fried Green Tomatoes; or perhaps walking through a pile of crunchy granola-sounding leaves. Wherever you find him, he is definitely listening to his rock playlist. It contains songs from Nirvana and The Doors, even Jimi Hendrix and a touch of Benny Goodman. Connor is a guy of many words, and they are comical. A few of his favorites are apiente, defenestration, gleek, and anatidaephobia. If he could travel back in time and give his freshman self a piece of life-saving advice, he would simply say: “Get a different haircut.” When Connor flies over to Whitman College in cloudy Washington, he will miss sunny California and the warm Webb environment he is leaving behind.

Something that is really cool what Connor does is he takes an interesting look at everything around him and tries to make it funny, but in a way of not taking the seriousness out of it.

Crystal Zhu is currently a dorm prefect in Appleby who enjoys challenging herself in cross country, eating out with friends, or just relaxing on campus. Crystal loved this year’s Homecoming for its large, spacious venue and because she got to go with her friends, but still regrets her sophomore Homecoming because she went with a junior. Her advice for her freshman self is to be true to authentic; she wishes that she had not forced herself to watch shows like Gossip Girls just so that she seemed “cultured.” She enjoyed herself most when she could talk about her favorite show Naruto, or simply spending time by herself. She cares about the environment and is a devoted vegetarian which is exactly why she will major in Environmental Science at University of California, Los Angeles. She will miss her close friends, Sydney Wang (‘20), Joyce Yuan (‘19), and Emma Qin (‘19), as well as the community at Webb that supported her for the past four years.

Crystal is a really cool person. She pursues her passions and the things she likes. She is a non-conformist, and is never afraid to speak up about her unique ideas and views. She is also a good listener of other people’s stories and a very supportive friend.

Drew Hersch’s music has made him into a mini-celebrity this year, and he has nothing but big things ahead of him. His passions for art, music, and photography have resulted in a massive body of work, from his freshman-year YouTube channel (don’t ask), to his professional photoshoots, to his album. Drew’s love for creating art takes up much of his free time, especially when an event like Jubilee comes up. As the lead in several theater performances, Drew truly embraces all forms of art. He is incredibly proud of how his fellow actors come together at each performance, and his talent and commitment elevates every performance. During the rare times he is not making music or art, he can be found at the beach or around Claremont with friends. Drew will take his talents to the University of Colorado, Boulder next year, where he will pursue a major in Media and Communications.

Drew is a creative genius who’s unafraid of expression (or telling everyone to stream “Honey”). I’m going to forever miss our constant existential crises.

Eddie Moreira offers a wise proverb to all who listen: “Don’t stress; everything happens for a reason.” When he is not assisting his peer advisees, you may find him in the library with his good friends, “the boys,” which is what he affectionately calls the WSC Class of 2019. Eddie admits that he will miss the bonds he have formed with his fellow classmates over four years, such as, John Cunningham (‘19), Jun Kim (‘19), and Matthew Martinez (‘19). Eddie is torn between baseball or water polo as his favorite afternoon activity at Webb, but knows that the beginning-of-year retreats were some of his favorite trips because he was able to bond with his friends and even rappel down a waterfall on his freshman retreat. Next year, Eddie will attend University of California, Berkeley where he will major in Public Health with a focus on Biology, as he plans to go down the pre-med route. Eddie hopes to be involved in the Public Health field, as he wants to spend his future saving lives.

Eddie is the type of person to fall down some stairs and then get back up and say, ‘I think it’s fine.’

— JJ Cunningham (‘19)

Edison Adler is a rock star; he plays a variety of instruments, including violin and the guitar. He was in the band Lucid Daze with one of his best friends, Ben Martinez (‘19). His fondest Webb memory is of him and his friends rocking out at 2018 Jubilee. One of his staple songs is “Everlong” by Foo Fighters. Along with being a musician, Edison is a varsity basketball player and participates in field shot-put and discus. Although his athletic focus is on his field events, he enjoys the comradery that comes with playing basketball. Whether it be on the court or in the classroom, Edison is a team player and a leader. He uses his engineering intuition to guide and develop new solutions to his problems. His passion for engineering comes from past experiences with his dad and watching Top Gear, which was sadly discontinued. He will be ready to display his engineering skills in the fall at the University of California, Davis.

He’s a big man with an even bigger heart who always has his friends’ best interests in mind.

Emily Schoffman is a natural leader, born with an unwavering ability to care for others. This quality is evident in her leadership responsibilities as a dorm prefect and co-captain of the VWS varsity tennis team. Her independence is a quality that will follow her to Rome this fall semester, and later to Tulane University in New Orleans. Taking after her mother, Emily hopes to study Psychology with a focus on early childhood education and a dream of possibly becoming a lawyer. In this exciting new phase in life, Emily looks forward to the freedom that college will bring. Her fondest memories of Webb are the friends she made and her time on the tennis team. She hopes that in five years she is graduating from college and is still in touch with her closest high school friends. A naturally outgoing person, her love of Vampire Diaries and American Idol will not be forgotten. It will be difficult to forget how a girl from Chicago can complain about the weather when it drops below 75 degrees Fahrenheit.

Emily is the kind of person who will go to war for you. She’s not afraid to stand up for what she believes in and she will never stop protecting the people she loves.

Emily Stepanian is one of those friends who comes by once in a lifetime. What makes her so unique is her capacity for caring about others and her natural leadership abilities. An admissions ambassador, dorm prefect, and co-captain of the VWS varsity soccer team, Emily’s drive is something that will follow her to University of Colorado and wherever life takes her after college. Emily hopes to become a doctor and will be studying Psychology and Pre-Med with a dream of going to London for medical school. Do not be fooled by Emily’s shy exterior; she is an avid fan of the Twilight series and could give Gordon Ramsay a run for his money with how talented of a chef she is. Her favorite memory from Webb was playing in the soccer finals and scoring in the last minute of the second overtime. Her contributions to the VWS soccer team will never be forgotten. It will be difficult to forget the kind, brilliant, and thoughtful girl that is Emily Stepanian.

She’s the kind of person with a magnetic energy, one of those rare people who comes into your life and shows you what true kindness and friendship can be.

As president of the Math Club and French Club, one would think Emma Qin could not handle any more academic rigor, yet she always goes the extra mile to exceed far beyond expectations. She is also on the tennis, robotics, and badminton teams and cannot pick a favorite because she looks forward to the next season at the end of every season. On the weekends, she sometimes goes out with her friends to eat when they can convince her to not stay in her room and sleep or do math. Emma genuinely loves math because “problem solving is fun”. She loves approaching a hard problem, not knowing exactly what to do, and figuring out its solution while learning on the way. Her hard work and passion for math has paid off as she will be attending the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in the spring and will be majoring in Math and Computer Science. Although she would advise her freshman self to not think of herself as antisocial and reach out to people, she will be leaving Webb with memories of hot pot with her friends, not regrets.

Eric Evans’ favorite quote, “I think it’s fine,” embodies his persona on campus. One cannot think of Eric Evans without thinking of his beloved truck with “YEE YEE” across the windshield and fishing stickers on the back. At Webb, he continued his 13-year-long career in baseball. Although he does not remember much else of high school, he values the memories he made with his friends while fishing, off-roading, driving out to the desert, and exploring the mountains. Next year, he will be going to the University of La Verne where he will be studying Business Management or Marketing after being inspired by his father who started his own business. He values the freedom that comes with a business degree which allows him to take the “Old Town Road” anywhere he pleases in the future.

He likes to fish a lot. He likes his truck a lot.

Erika is a very positive person on campus. If she could go back in time, she would tell her freshman self, “Don’t be afraid to try new things; go for it.” She holds a position on the Honor Cabinet, which she enjoys because it gives her an opportunity to help others and be a part of the community. Found on the Liu Cheung stage singing, acting, and dancing, she enjoyed the productions the most throughout her years at Webb because they offered different ways to creatively express her emotions and try new hobbies like dancing. Erika especially liked Theme Nights because even though it was very stressful, it paid off in the end because of the big wins her class took overall. Her favorite quote is from Cloud Atlas: “Yes, what is any ocean but a multitude of drops?” Next year, Erika will be attending Wellesley College in Massachusetts and majoring in East Asian Studies. Erika is excited to start on her new adventure.

Erika is a contradiction. She’s intimidating, yet has the most ridiculous laugh. She’s really quiet, even though she’s in theatre. But despite the fact that her existence consists of opposites, Erika remains uniquely herself in a world that demands either one or the other.

Eunice Yip, Dr. Andy Farke’s star paleontologist, has had an incredibly successful Webb career. As VWS class president, she led her the class of 2019 to three consecutive Theme Nights wins. She has more debate trophies than she can count. This year, she became a published researcher when she wrote a paper on the plant-eating dinosaur Edmontosaurus along with Dr. Farke. When she is not working hard in the lab or preparing for Student Government, you can find Eunice eating out with Catherine Wu (‘19) and Ivy Liu (‘19) at a trendy restaurant or chilling in her dorm room watching movies. Eunice will continue to challenge herself academically when she attends Columbia University in New York City next year, where she plans to study Urban Planning. Webb will truly miss her funny and laid-back personality, but Eunice’s accomplishments will leave a lasting legacy.

Euphy Liu lives by the How I Met Your Mother quote: “Because sometimes even if you know how something’s gonna end that doesn’t mean you can’t enjoy the ride.” Webb’s long ride has given Euphy dozens of opportunities to try new activities, such as tennis, softball, Student Government, paleontology, and many more. Out of all of her extracurriculars, her favorite was the winter dance show, specifically the 2018 show, Human, in which she grew close to Michael Szanyi. Euphy’s journey at Webb has also brought many important memories, including attending Prom as a sophomore and planning Theme Nights for her class. Outside of school, Euphy continues to impress. She has figure skated since she was little and hopes to continue skating in college. Her work in the science field at Webb has fueled her passion for lab work and inspired her to pursue Biochemistry and Earth Sciences at Wellesley College next fall.

The reason why Euphy likes minions is a mystery to me. But, if I had to guess, I’d say it’s because they share so many similarities: they’re bubbly, obsessed with bananas, loved by middle-aged moms, and have the biggest hearts out of anyone you’ll ever meet.

Being a new senior has not impeded Garret Goodrich’s impact on the Webb community. He is an active member of the LGBTQ+ & Allies club and has been an important addition to the theater tech program this year. Before officially enrolling, he still spent a lot of time with Webb students. He said, “Sophomore year [2016] homecoming [at Webb] kind of has this mythic spot in my mind. It was this like really weird moment of being in a setting where I didn’t know anyone and I just felt super free.” As a freshman at his old school, he said he felt like he took himself too seriously, and he didn’t connect with many people. Garrett spends his weekends with his friends though also enjoys taking care of his garden and aquarium. He plans on studying Gender Studies and Plant Biology at Vassar College in Dutchess County, New York, but he is open to changing his plans.

Even though I’ve only known Garret for a year, he’s made this year so much brighter and nicer.

Gavin Lee has made a great impact on Webb as a leader on the Chapel Council and an admissions fellow. Gavin’s advice to his freshman self would be to “do what you want.” As an athlete, Gavin loved triathlon; he enjoyed getting to know his teammates and his coach. On the weekends, he goes out and explores new places to eat. One of his favorite moments was giving his chapel talk because to him, it symbolized one of the final traditions before graduation. Gavin’s friends got him through Webb by helping him relax and be himself. Gavin will miss Webb’s campus when he goes to college, because Boston contrasts with Claremont’s beauty. Both of Gavin’s parents are in the business industry and were math oriented growing up, which led him to want to pursue this similar passion. Gavin will be studying Business Administration in the fall at Boston University.

In a small community like Webb, it can be hard to find your friend group, but getting to know new people is Gracie Reda’s greatest talent and passion. What she most appreciates about Webb are the personal relationships she has been able to develop with the faculty. Her favorite teachers include Brian Rogers, Michelle Gerken, and Jessica Fisher. She would advise her freshman self to simply be herself. In her time at Webb, she played softball for four seasons and was a team captain. In addition to playing softball and hanging out with friends, Gracie enjoys watching a wide variety of movies and shows, including Almost Famous, Someone Great, SpongeBob Squarepants, Psych, and Grownish. Next year, when Gracie starts college at University of California, Riverside, she will begin to study Psychology; she wants to major in this field so that one day she can become a therapist for children who have experienced trauma.

Gracie thinks a million miles per hour, but still slows down to care for those around her.

She is blunt, she is bold, she is Hannah Botnick. Whether you catch her in the dorms or just walking around campus, you can always count on her to be listening to some funky rap and spitting lyrics with an honest tongue. Her directness is what makes Hannah, Hannah. She looks up to Tyler the Creator, a rapper who is always himself and does everything for himself. When she is not jamming out to Tyler or doing her homework, Hannah is definitely watching a hilarious cartoon and is on her way to binging all the seasons it has to offer. Hannah wants to grow into her fullest potential, but she also wants to help others grow. She is interested in the psychology behind drug addicts and the effects of drugs on the brain. When she leaves Webb, she will bring her candid attitude and genuine care for people to Skidmore College in upstate New York.

I really like that Hannah is really honest, I feel like we need more people like that in this world. She’s really funny and just a great friend. If you ever need anything, she’ll be there for you.

Hoyin Tsoi has the highest vertical jump you will ever see. The only things that are even more intense than his jump are his passions, whether they be for volleyball or for the people around him. Hoyin’s favorite memory at Webb is the 2019 volleyball season when his team continued far into CIF, a stunning winning streak compared to only winning one game during last year’s season. Hoyin believes that he became more honest and open because of the communication on the volleyball court. Other than volleyball, you could also find Hoyin watching movies with his friends, doing his weekly groceries at Target, listening to “A Sky Full of Stars” in his dorm room, or helping out the ninth grade boarders as a dorm prefect. This fall, Hoyin is going to continue his journey at New York University Leonard N. Stern School of Business. Hoyin understands the environment is going to be different, but he is relieved that there are many other Webb alumni at NYU.

Hoyin is the most outgoing socially awkward person I know.

Ivy Liu is the embodiment of an artsy person. From taking Dr. Ardina Greco’s art class to playing an active role in Art Café, Ivy is passionate about art and design. Besides her devotion to the arts, she also enjoys watching “cheesy Chinese high school movies” and spending time alone in her room on quiet weekends. Throughout the years, Ivy’s biggest motivation has been her sister, who always inspires her to better; Ivy says that she will get more allowance if she does a better job than her sister. This fall, Ivy will be continuing her adventure at The New School Parsons School of Design. Ivy thinks it will be different since Parsons is located in downtown Manhattan, and it is also an art school. However, she believes that branching out to a new place will help her achieve her dreams. In the future, Ivy hopes to work as a designer for a brand that she likes while having the freedom to do whatever she wants, such as traveling around the world.

You might accidentally mistake Ivy for your Asian grandma because she cares about you so much.

Izzy Gerard is a busy bee. She enjoys the constant flow of being occupied and has mastered the art of organization and time management with the help of Webb’s workload. She works with the Chapel Council and constantly volunteers to help the Raymond M. Alf Museum of Paleontology on campus. When she is not working, you can catch her watching The Great British Bake Off, indulging in its sweet ambiance and adorable British slang. You might even find her dancing to the music track of Mamma Mia! or singing songs by Lauren Alaina. If Izzy is not doing one of these things, then she must be swimming; she will be joining a water polo club team next year. As said before, Izzy’s schedule is filled to the brim, just the way she likes it. She will happily bring her determination and strong work ethic to the Anthropology and Biology programs at Davidson College.

Izzy is my star. She’s always there for me when I need advice or even a night of ice cream and Netflix. I know that she will continue to shine even brighter when she starts college next year.

Imagine that you are driving next to an Audi, thumping to the beats of throwback R&B, the latest in pop, or reggaetón hits. You may not recognize Izzy Martinez at first, but her appreciation for the old, eagerness for the new, and love for her roots are apparent in a simple drive down the 210 Freeway. Izzy may not be the loudest girl, but that does not stop her from dancing her heart out at concerts, leading her soccer team to a League Championship as captain, or guiding her class to a third consecutive Theme Nights dub as their vice president. Izzy will miss the tight-knit Webb community and her family when she begins her time at the University of Southern California to study Environmental Science. Nonetheless, this Inland Empire native is ready to spread her wings and explore the world, one açai bowl at a time.

If you were to go back four years and try to locate Jacob Borello as a freshman, you would probably have a hard time finding him. The only dead giveaways might be his haircut, his cute face, maybe his love for technology, or if you walked into Hooper and tried looking for the kid on his iPad playing Clash of Clans. Since then, though, Jacob has become an almost completely different person. After tennis tryouts did not work so well for him, Jacob signed up for track and field and he never left. Although he admits the uniform didn’t fit too well at first due to his small frame, his hard work (and growth spurt) made the uniform fit. He admitted to a fondness of the outfit because it is “the easiest to flex in.” Jacob will study Computer Science at Lewis and Clark College in Portland, Oregon.

Known to his friends for his self-proclaimed “awkward, but charming and lovable” personality, Jacob Passalaqua has made the most of his four years at Webb. From dominating Theme Nights with his class, to piling up debate trophies, to driving his friends all around SoCal as the designated “dude with the car,” he has made lots of memories that will last a lifetime. Next year, Jacob will pursue a lifelong passion for chemistry at Vanderbilt University in Tennessee, but he anticipates coming home to beautiful California after he graduates college. Until then, you can find him at the latest Marvel movie, taking in nature around Webb, or even at the ice rink, listening to Chance the Rapper along the way. He wants to make every last moment of his high school career count.

With each and every passing day, Jacob Passalaqua gradually takes on more of the form and mannerisms of Tom Jurczak. It is to the point where I am now unable to distinguish between the two.

If you ever need help with a video game, Jaden Dumont is the person to ask. He loves spending his free time playing video games with his friends, their favorite being Fortnite. When he is not taking Victory Royales, Jaden can be found listening to artists like Billie Eilish or Future. He has loved taking classes taught by Rick Duque, such as Honors Sports Literature & History and the Foundations of Virtue. Jaden has enjoyed his time on the JV tennis team for the past three years at Webb. Although a lot of his high school experience has been pretty straightforward, Jaden now laughs when he looks back at the time he accidentally set off the fire alarm. He is excited to attend Mount Saint Mary’s University next year, where he will follow in his parents’ footsteps in the healthcare industry by studying Nursing. He will miss Webb and his friends here, but he will take memories with him like the sophomore class beach trip.

You may know Jeffrey Tang as the quiet senior who slams the trash can lid early in the morning on Alamo Lawn. Jeffrey has enjoyed playing Super Smash Bros with his friends and going out to the Village to eat. Even though he laughs at his many tardies now, he liked functional fitness and the deadly warm-ups that he had to do. Jeffrey will also miss his friends and is sad to be leaving them because he will not have the same close friends in college and he will not have the same bonds. His favorite teacher at Webb was John Lawrence because he told very cool stories and made learning and the classroom environment fun. Jeffrey would want to let his freshman self know to “have fun” because you only get to enjoy high school once. Although Jeffrey will miss Webb very much, he will be attending New York University to study Liberal Arts.

Jeffrey is kind, laidback and a great friend to hang out with, except when he plays Yoshi on Super Smash Bros.

Jillian Holliday is going to change the world and is confident that she is going to make the world a better place. With plans to become a lawyer in the future, Jillian wants to bring equity to the criminal justice system, which she believes promulgates unfair experiences for its victims. Jillian is not one to back away from a challenge. She performed in the dance show for the first time this year, which pushed her out of her comfort zone and allowed her to meet new people. When she is not pursuing personal growth, she loves to relax, do yoga, or drink coffee with her friends. A self-described “warm, thoughtful, and awkward” person, Jillian wishes that she had been more social during her time at Webb, especially during her freshman year. As she moves on next year to Colgate University in New York, Jillian wants to major in History before transitioning into law school.

She’s not the loudest person in the world, but when she has a bit of coffee and something she’s passionate about, there’s nothing stopping Jillian’s determination to learn and connect with others.

You might see JJ Cunningham walking around the football field, or sitting at the Senior Spot referencing shows like The Office and Brooklyn 99. As an admissions fellow, head of the Honor Cabinet, captain of the football team, student, and friend, JJ has left more than a small mark on our school. These marks include physical ones, which the Library South desk could attest to after he was part of the group of boys that watched its glass shatter his sophomore year. JJ helped make history as being a part of the first Webb football team in 25 years to get a playoff-win his junior year. Next year, JJ will be playing football for the University of Washington in St. Louis while he studies Economics and Sports. JJ’s contagious laugh and big heart will be missed next year on campus. His leadership, grit, and selflessness will take him far as JJ leaves his next marks.

JJ has a heart big enough for all the people in the world and he has decided to fill it with Geography.

Having lived in Taipei, Hong Kong, Claremont, and soon to be Eagle Rock, Jordan Fang is truly a global citizen. His favorite class is AP Chinese Language and Culture because he really enjoys the laidback in-class environment. Although Jordan is an avid water polo player, his passion is personal fitness. He dedicated seven out of his twelve seasons at Webb participating in the winter and spring functional fitness afternoon-activity programs. When not grinding reps in the gym, this exercise-enthusiast can also be spotted jamming out to Sam Smith, Imagine Dragons, and Ed Sheeran or playing Super Smash Bros with his friends in Berry Center. Jordan loves dancing to all genres of music, especially performing in front of his peers in community events like Webb Idol and Theme Nights. Next year, Jordan is heading just an hour’s drive away to Occidental College where he will follow in his dad’s footsteps to major in Business Economics and Management.

Jordan is a full-course Happy Meal that is sweet, meaty, and loyal.

At Webb, you can find Joyce Yuan making avocado toast for breakfast or hot pot for dinner with her friends. To get her through the grueling papers and lab reports, Joyce listens to lofi hip-hop on YouTube. As a golfer, she loves the support of her team even though the sport is mainly individual. She considers golf as a way to escape the bustle of Webb and relax with a bowl of açai. As head of the International Student Prefects, Joyce helps international students with their transition into Webb and answers any questions they might have. She has built a family for international students far away from home. She will be attending the Marshall School of Business at the University of Southern California in the fall and will dearly miss her floor-to-ceiling windows in her Jones single.

Joyce may seem intimidating to freshmen, but she is actually really nice. She will always be there for her friends and is never scared to be bold and honest.

JP Calderoni is a puppy, especially when a good song comes on. As soon as he hears it, his tail starts wagging and he jumps up and down in excitement. In addition to music, JP is always excited about his work as a head peer advisor. He especially enjoyed planning orientation and created some of his favorite memories at the beginning of the year while working with freshmen and other PAs. After school, JP is a skilled doubles tennis player and exerts all of his energy in every game. He played varsity for all his years at Webb and plans on continuing during college. JP is never ashamed of his puppy-like attitude. Instead, he boasts about it and lives by his mantra of “stay true to yourself” and “you don’t need to satisfy others in order to satisfy yourself.” Next year, JP will return to his home country of Mexico and study at the Monterrey Institute of Technology.

JP is always down to have a good time and is definitely the life of the party, but beyond that, he is a great guy to talk to. He always listens and is super caring and loyal. Definitely someone I’ve been lucky to call a friend.

A passionate and ambitious student, Julia Yanez cannot wait to make a big impact on the world. When she is not doing homework, you can find her spending time with friends and family, watching Friends and The Office, or maybe out of the country on one of Webb’s international trips. Her passion for travel has taken her all around the world, from beautiful England to the tropical paradise of Belize. Julia made a difference at Webb as co-chair of the Honor Cabinet, and she considers taking that opportunity one of the best decisions she has ever made. She will bring that spirit with her to Harvard University next year, where she plans to study Social Sciences, with working in the US Senate or United Nations as her final goal. Julia wants to change the world, and she cannot wait to get started.

Even though she acts like she hates everything sometimes, she cares more than almost anybody else at this school and it shows when you get to know her.

If you saw Juliana Base without knowing who she is, you would probably be intimidated by her. Her arduous aura is further evinced by the fact that she has competed in sports every three seasons for four years, and was the only girl on the Webb football team. Underneath her rigid surface, though, Juliana is really a curious, artistic, and sincere person. As a day student prefect, she enjoyed her time spent serving library duty, helping underclassmen with their math homework and hanging out with her friends. Juliana is also really interested in science. After reading The Bone Labyrinth by James Rollins, she discovered a hidden interest for “tiny stuff you can’t see,” which led her to want to study Microbiology. On the weekends, she enjoys a good nap, a good show, or some good food. Juliana will attend the University of California, Riverside with her major undeclared, but is leaning towards studying Biology.

Jun Kim has called a handful of places home: South Korea, the Bay Area, and most recently, Claremont, California. Within the span of a few hours at Webb, Jun can transition from being concertmaster of the school orchestra to a varsity tennis team co-captain. This unlikely combination serves to highlight the true essence of his life: “loud, but not annoying.” Jun embraces his self-proclaimed aura whenever he has the chance. He can be found cruising up and down the streets of Claremont with his friends, seeking adventures and trying not to get in trouble along the way. He will miss his time spent with those friends who have stuck by side, even when his rowdiness meets its maximum. Jun will add Boston to his list of homes this fall, fostering his love for math and his eagerness to learn about the world through the Applied Mathematics major at Tufts University.

Jun is actually an intelligent human being, but he can’t help demonstrate otherwise on a daily basis. He knows how to crack a smile on everyone’s faces and exasperate teachers. He’s hilarious, but he has enough seriousness to make him a loyal and caring friend.

Kevin Kang is most often described with one word: large. He stretches his large, authentic personality across the Webb campus by serving on the Honor Committee, playing three varsity sports, and dancing to K-pop music at various school events, such as Theme Nights and Jubilee. One of his favorite memories is dancing to Twice, a popular K-pop girl group, before every water polo game with his teammates. He wishes that he had opened up to more people throughout his years at Webb. However, he does not regret his past actions because he lives his life as an existentialist and believes that everything he has done has shaped him into the person he is today. He developed these morals through his favorite class, Advanced Studies Existentialism and the Human Condition. This fall, he will continue to grow even larger while studying both Philosophy and Biology at Brown University.

He’s big and stubborn like a cow, but I’d give him a 10/10 from the Aidz Review.

Simply put, Kourosh Ariane is a sushi-loving Persian boy who drives a Toyota Highlander, which he affectionately dubbed the “Neylander.” A competitive cross country runner and a lover of tennis, Kourosh is a blend of the serious and the sincere. When he is not experimenting with how many hours he can invest in a Mountain Dew-fueled digital mayhem, he is offering sage advice such as “be chill,” and “ask for help when you need it.” During his four years, Kourosh has practiced what he preaches, as he transformed from a very tense freshman to a happy-go-lucky senior who takes everything in stride. Kourosh’s time at Webb has been deeply impacted by his friends such as Brian Yang (‘19), Jaden Dumont (‘19), and Andrew Shen (‘19). The Impractical Jokers-loving peer advisor will be attending Pitzer College where he intends to study Psychology.

Kourosh is like a man child but, inside he’s sweet, loving, and somehow never out of energy. So don’t let the beard scare you away.

You are driving down Towne Avenue and you see Kris Reichartz-Smith riding a skateboard, but not just any skateboard. He is cruising on his electric skateboard, heading down to his favorite coffee shop, Sanctuary Coffee. From the dorms to the admissions office and the volleyball court, Kris manages to accomplish it all and make his busy schedule look easy. On weekends, when he is not helping the freshmen in Holt or giving tours to prospective students, you can find Kris eating at the best restaurants in town, or watching Suits in his dorm room with Bill King (‘19) and Hoyin Tsoi (‘19). In the fall, Kris will be leaving the West Coast and moving to Boston, Massachusetts to attend Babson College. While away, Kris will miss his friends, but also joking around with his favorite teachers in the Quad. At Babson, Kris will follow in his family’s footsteps and study International Business.

Kris is an amazing person. He is always fun to be around and can always put a smile on your face.

As a deep and brilliant thinker, Lawrence Mao is extremely passionate about programming. He competes in robotics competitions while enrolled in higher-level computer science classes at Harvey Mudd College. However, he still takes time to appreciate the simple things around him. Lawrence enjoys being a part of a team and working with like-minded people; it is the reason he has enjoyed his time with badminton, Theme Week, robotics, his friends, and Student Government as WSC senior class vice-president. Lawrence’s favorite Webb memory was seeing a teacher walk into the dining hall, inspect the food, and leave. He likes this story because of how clearly it illustrated the human aspect of Webb teachers, in contrast to the disciplinary figures his old teachers represented. Lawrence plays clarinet in the orchestra and is co-head of the Piano Club. After reflecting on all his time at Webb, he would advise his past self to reach out and explore more. He will take this advice with him next year at Johns Hopkins University.

Lawrence is a very hardworking friend, but still loves to have fun by playing mobile games and Fortnite.

Lexie Freeland, with her leggings and sweatshirts, is either burrowed in her bed away from civilization or at the senior spot socializing with all of her friends. Her infectious laugh combined with her sometimes too-dark sense of humor makes her presence magnetic. She usually looks scared with doll-like eyes, but she is also contradictingly brave – constantly on the search for the best scary movie and the most haunted places in California. Her perceptiveness and attention to detail radiates through her work and friendships, whether its powering through one more rehearsal for a presentation or noticing when you’re not having the best day. Her favorite memories have been with her friends, blaring music in the car while driving to Rowland Heights to try new foods. Next year, Lexie will be attending Northeastern University where she will study on a pre-med track with a STEM-heavy workload.

Lexie thinks like a rapper but lives like a retired man.

If you ever hear a corny pun followed by a cackling laugh, chances are that you have just encountered the iconic Linda Wu. She is a leader on campus: chair of the Dorm Council, chair of the Service Council, and a three-year member of the Chapel Council. When not laughing at her own jokes or delegating duties among her peers, Linda can be found cultivating her passions for dance and music. She loves participating in Webb’s winter dance shows, teaching Webb Idol to WSC boarders, and chilling to beats such as Khai Dreams and Khalid on repeat. Linda enjoys venturing off campus to take a breather, whether it be walking around Claremont to grab Sanctuary Coffee or coasting down to the Santa Monica pier. Webb’s lovable, pun-making Linda will venture even further to Houston this fall, where she will attend Rice University to major in Sociology.

Linda is very strong-willed and always does everything to the best of her ability; that’s why everyone loves her so much!

Lindsay Jung is a mermaid. Half-fish, half-human, she is a school record-breaker in four swim events. Lindsay is a co-captain of the VWS varsity water polo squad, but most importantly, an inspirational teammate. Her infectious smile radiates beyond the pool deck, as she is an active volunteer at her local hospital and a passionate organic chemist. Lindsay’s most cherished memories at Webb have been with her best friends: snorkeling and hiking at Catalina Island, dancing the night away at Skyspace LA, and binge-watching the latest season of Game of Thrones. Born and raised in Rancho Cucamonga, Lindsay is eager to venture across the Pacific Ocean to study nursing at Chaminade University of Honolulu. There, nestled in between the Hawaiian crystal clear waters and volcanoes, she will combine her passion for helping others with her desire to work in a hospital. In five years, you can catch this multi-talented, water-loving mermaid working as a nurse in either the Golden or Aloha State.

Maria Shevchuk is the friendly face you can count on to cheer you up any time any day. Coming to Webb in junior year, she has enjoyed getting to know the Class of 2019 in events like Theme Nights. As a dorm prefect, she loves helping and talking to anybody who needs a friend, offering them the sagest advice. She has dipped her toes in many new activities like water polo and swim. On the weekends, she loves to stay in and watch TV shows and, in her words, “not do anything productive.” Even so, Maria loves to go on adventures like snowboarding in a onesie and hanging out with alpacas. Next year, she will attend Boston University and reunite with harsh winters. Hopefully, her path will lead her to fulfill her vision of life in five years – to have a degree and attend her class’s fifth year reunion.

Maria is like a big sister. She is open minded, open hearted and always gives her friends care, love and trust.

Marty Hild is often seen before he is heard. His most unique attributes are his artistic talents, which he hopes to pursue in college. Marty will start college at Western Washington University and plans to double major in Art and Business. His affinity for business comes from his parents’ entrepreneurship skills and Marty hopes to one day establish his own advertising company. His favorite Webb memories are hanging out with his friends, Drew Hersch (‘19), Vanessa Casillas (‘19), and Bella Biane (‘19), and coming back to decorate his room senior year. Marty is the type of friend who will go above and beyond to show his support. Whether he invites friends to his condo in Cabo or supports Drew in following his dreams of performing, Marty will be remembered as a friend who always gave his all. Marty can often be found covered in spray paint or chilled in the swimming pool. His Instagram aesthetic is something many of us can only aspire to emulate.

Marty is one of the most loyal people I’ve ever met. He’ll stand by the people he cares about through thick and thin, and acts as a constant support system.

Mary Davis is ready to take on the world, no matter what it throws at her. She demonstrates a strong and fair moral compass, which has led her to become the co-chair of the Honor Cabinet. She is excited to study Political Science (and maybe even become a Senator), especially because her personal hero is Bob Simon from 60 Minutes. She comes from a family of water polo players, which makes it no surprise that she has played the sport for over ten years and believes it is the best sport in the world. Her fondest memory is going to the farmers market in her hometown with her dad on Saturday mornings. She wishes that she had gone to more office hours throughout her time at Webb, but she is prepared to put in the extra work when she attends American University in Washington, D.C. this fall.

Mary is the kind of person who is always laughing. She’ll laugh at everything, even her own jokes.

6’’4’, 265 pounds, a varsity football team co-captain, a frequenter of the weight room—yet Matt Martinez is antithetical to mean, stereotypical, arrogant high school athletic superstars. He has the warmest smile and the best responses in a conversation: “Uh huh,” “Oh yeah totally,” “For sure!” Throughout his journey at Webb, Matt’s family, especially his three older siblings, have motivated him the most. As Matt spent more time at Webb, he became more social, open, and straightforward with people. Matt’s relentless grind has paid off as he has committed to University of Chicago to continue his football and academic careers. His journey starts this September when he plays against high school teammates JJ Cunningham (‘19) and Simon Dawson (‘19) in his first college football game. For the far future, Matt sees himself as an orthopedic surgeon and he is just on the “slow grind towards his goal.”

Matt is truly a Big Friendly Giant. He is always there for you and a lot of fun to be with.

Michael Carrasco is the modern-day renaissance man. His interests span across a wide variety of subjects, as he loves playing guitar, reading books, and shooting hoops. To add to these myriad activities, Michael finds himself leaning towards a pre-med track since many of his family members are doctors. His passion for learning is evident in his choice to attend a month-long course in Mexico this summer, where he can practice his Spanish and become more engaged in the culture. Michael is a self-proclaimed adventurer who likes to get out of his comfort zone by doing crazy stunts like cliff-jumping into the ocean. Although he prides himself on being social now, he wishes that he had been less timid during his early time at Webb. Either way, he is excited to major in either Biology or Psychiatry as he attends the University of California, Riverside, next year.

Michael is a center stuck in a point guard’s body.

Nathan Paik is a constant source of energy around campus, often bursting with loud exclamations when least expected. Even if you have never gotten the chance to talk to him, you have most likely seen him casually dancing to the K-pop music playing in his head or shouting across the Quad to one of his friends. Along with this energy, Nathan demonstrates a bright spirit, navigating his courses unbiasedly and keeping an intellectually open mind. Apart from being co-head of the Day Student Prefects, he is a dedicated varsity basketball co-captain and an essential part of the varsity swim team. However, Nathan acted as a leader without a title when he was caught guiding a herd of seniors boys into the bushes behind Chandler Field to catch a rare Pokémon. The I.E. will not be losing its local Paikman this fall when he attends Pomona College in Claremont.

Nathan idolizes a lot of people: Lonzo Ball, BTS, Mr. Rogers, you name it. One thing he doesn’t realize is that he’s my idol. Whether it’s on the basketball court or in the math classroom, I can always look up to him for anything.

Nick Johnson is highly distinguished for his accomplishments in various varsity Webb sports, including football, basketball, and track and field. One of his fondest memories at Webb was traveling with the football team to play against Stevenson School in Northern California during the fall of his senior year. On this trip, he developed stronger relationships with members of his team, traveled to a new location, and played a great game. However, Nick is more than an amazing athlete. He is also a caring friend, an energetic spirit, one of the funniest people you will ever meet, and a softie for the environment. He developed his passion for environmental studies while taking Honors Global Sustainability & Solutions with Mrs. Gerken, one of his favorite classes at Webb. This fall, he will attend Arizona State University to play Division I football while studying Environmental Engineering.

Nicole Huh successfully blends her love of sports and science. While managing the triathlon team and playing volleyball, Nicole challenged herself with Experimental Physics. Although she will tell you she is bad at physics, she did what Nicole does: pushing herself and succeeding. As the unofficial roommate of Sophia Li (‘19), Nicole’s central presence and dedication in her friends’ lives is admirable. If given the chance, she would not hesitate to spend a free day with friends. Her friends are those lucky enough to not have realized that Nicole’s favorite quote is, “The trick is to not let people know how really weird you are until it’s too late for them to back out.” More Phoebe than Rachel or Monica, Nicole’s avid Friends consumption is matched only by her adoration for Lucifer, Dynasty and Scandal. For the moment, she is Whitman College bound, off to study Psychology, because, well, it sounded interesting. One day, that may take her to graduate school because, you know, that sounds interesting too. And why not?

Nicole is like my sister, she basically lives with me at this point and talks to me way more than my actual sister. She funny and down to earth, and I just love her.

Like an onion, Noah Martinez is pale and has many layers. When you first meet him, he is the perfect student every teacher and parent loves. He is a day student prefect, a straight-A student, and wants to pursue the pre-med track in college. But each time you hear him scream out of nowhere, you get to know him better and better. He can cook and bake, but only mac and cheese or boxed brownie mix. He can play soccer, but chooses to get excused from afternoon activity. He can drive, but likes to drive like he does not. At the end of the day, no matter which layer of Noah people know, they all can agree on one thing: he is an easygoing and supportive friend who is down to go to the beach or drive around for hours anyday. The Webb community will be a little less bright and shorter in height after he goes on to attend Swarthmore College in the fall.

Olivia Vasquez appreciates the friendly community of Webb, especially daily exchanges with friends and faculty around campus. For this reason, she considers Dr. Brendan Beikmann her favorite teacher because he is easy to talk to, and in turn, approachable. He is also knowledgeable about biology, one of Olivia’s interests, as well as fitness, Olivia’s typical afternoon activity. This appreciation also is reflected in her favorite moment at Webb: when Mr. Rick Duque went to give her a high-five and accidentally hit her in the head. Although it was slightly embarrassing, she laughingly remembers it as her favorite memory because it exemplifies We teachers’ friendly natures. She has been the goalie on the water polo team, president of the Paleontology Club, and even runs her own baking business in her free time. For leisure, she likes to watch American Horror Story and Bates Motel. Next year Olivia will attend Occidental College to study Biology.

The only thing that matches the quality of her memes is her cake-baking ability.

Rachel Kho is the vegan yoga master that everyone wishes they could be. She flies from book series to book series and can play a variety of instruments; she even is a head peer advisor, president of the LGBT Club, and president of the Harry Potter Club. She gracefully cries though her favorite Korean dramas, theatre musicals, and poetically written films. Rachel is considerate and she wishes the world could be equally as caring; afterall, she knows that it does not take anything to be kind. Her spiritual energy overlaps with her constant thirst for knowledge and bursts of curiosity. She is diligent yet calm, hard-working yet serene. When Rachel attends the University of California, Los Angeles next fall, she will fill their campus with her positivity and determination, just as she has with Webb for the past four years.

Rachel’s future autobiographical soundtrack would feature songs about veganism, Takis, and offkey renditions of broadway hits with her friends.

Raian Ohtaka loves to hang out with his friends. No matter what they are doing or where they go, he enjoys spending time with the people who make life fun. When he leaves for the University of California, Los Angeles next year, Raian will miss the beautiful Webb campus and the incredible people, like Cody Murray-Bruce (‘19) and Eunice Yip (‘19), who make it what it is. Raian has loved staying involved in campus life, from the varsity soccer team to Theme Nights. Going to the CIF semi-finals last year and winning Theme Nights for the past three years have been some of his favorite Webb memories. When he is not on campus, he enjoys spending time with his friends, getting food, or just hanging out at the Village. Raian focuses on not trying too hard and enjoying all of the little moments with his friends. His favorite teacher, Greg Gerken, and his Existentialism & the Human Condition class have inspired Raian to study either Psychology or Philosophy in college. After that, he hopes to be working in one of these fields in Japan.

One time Raian tried to jump out of a moving golf cart to save Eunice’s and my life, but he failed woefully and just fell off. It was the funniest moment of my life.

Robert Torrance is the embodiment of the classic California spirit with his warm personality, chill vibes, and appreciation for the land around him. Whether he is exploring the Pacific Ocean, hiking up Potato Mountain with his best buddies, driving to the 626 Night Market, or cliff jumping into a Belizean river, the world is Robert’s oyster. When he reflects back on his time at Webb, he will remember these times he spent being adventurous with his friends. Despite his preference to stay “behind-the-scenes and out of the spotlight,” Robert influenced his peers as a co-chair of the Honor Committee and a co-captain of the varsity water polo and swim teams. He will enter college with his major undeclared, but similar to his favorite Smash character Pac-Man, Robert would rather approach life one little dot at a time. He is ready to start a new chapter of adventures, beginning this fall at Trinity University.

Robert is such an amazing dude. Even if I was the hottest girl in the world and could date anyone, I would date Ben Chai so that I could be friends with Robert.

It is hard to miss Rylie Brick, since coaches always give her shoutouts, her name is prominent on the pool’s record board, and you probably catch a glimpse of her everyday. Practically everyone knows of her swimming prowess, and most people know her in general since she is “cool with everyone” as a Webbie and a peer advisor. She leads a rebellious lifestyle and prefers to remain unrestrained, often doing things out of spite. What you might not know about Rylie, though, is her quiet side. Riley describes herself as an introvert, despite what her disposition might make you think. She gets along well with everyone, but sometimes just prefers to spend some time to herself with a good book like East of Eden by John Steinbeck. Rylie Brick will attend the US Coast Guard Academy in New London, Connecticut next year, and hopes to be a Marine and Environmental Science major.

Rylie’s the person I’d want by my side in a zombie apocalypse or any bad situation really. I love her so much and it’s going to be really hard to take on college without her, but I know we’re both gonna excel in whatever we’re doing!

Sam Annunziato is an Impractical Jokers-watching and Italian food-loving sports aficionado. He is nothing short of a skilled prankster. His favorite Webb memory speaks to his love of pranks: during his sophomore year, Sam’s parents went on vacation to Europe, so he decided to stay in Brian Yang (‘19) and Jun Kim’s (‘19) double room for that period of time. One fine day, Sam and Brian thought it would be a nice idea to move Jun’s mattress on top of the ping pong table in the Ruddick Commons Room, resulting in a punishment of campusing, which Sam proudly asserts he has avoided to this day. On a more serious note, Sam has already decided that he wants to pursue his love of sports, especially hockey and basketball, and his love of journalism in the future. In the fall, he will be majoring in Sports Journalism at Lake Forest College, located outside of Chicago.

He is a natural born leader who likes to get meaty.

You are walking up the steps to the library, and you notice something that resembles a tumbleweed, bobbing up and down, side to side. Confused, and slightly scared, you stumble up the steps to look more closely. You realize that the brown blob was actually Simon Dawson’s hair. The motion that resembled a spastic squirrel was actually him dancing. When he is not busting a move, Simon can be found advising in his Peer Advisor meetings, getting another phat dub in football, high-fiving Mr. Ben Farrell, or going absolutely “sicko mode” with JP Calderoni (‘19). Simon has become a master at balancing sports, leadership, and the life of a dancing queen in his four years at Webb. He will take these skills with him to the University of Washington in St. Louis where he will play football and study Biology. Simon’s unique energy has impacted many, especially the class of 2019.

Simon is like Thanos, he perfectly balances great grades with great athletic ability. Like Thanos balanced the blade on his finger.

Sophia Li’s ideal evening is filled with burgers and a side of Friends. This “Rachel” is the ideal roommate, and her couch is forever filled with adoring fans. Webb’s best listener and offerer of sage advice reminds us all that mistakes are a part of the process. A foodie with a refined palate and a penchant for adventure, this tennis aficionado is also a Homecoming fan, delighting in the energy and community of the Webb family. If she could go back four years and do it over again, she would take her grades less seriously, prioritize her human connections, and play just as hard as she studied. Inspired by the supermen in all of us here at Webb-ville, she is a vocal advocate for pursuing passions, dreams and new experiences. That is why she will embark for the great country of Canada to study in the sciences. Here, here to a great northern adventure!

Tara Helou can be found editing the yearbook or at the Combined Kitchen in Rancho Cucamonga. You can recognize Tara by her bluish hair, but it was not always this way; she said, “I tried to dye my whole hair red, and like it looked really really bad.” Outside of school, she loves to hang out with her friends and go out to brunch. Like all seniors, she loved Theme Nights for the Class of 2019’s spirit, and loved dancing the night away at Homecoming. She will definitely miss the faculty, like Yearbook Advisor Hilary Barhydt, and all the people she met at Webb who have supported her, even though she wishes her freshman self was more authentic. She loves Freaks and Geeks for its coming of age story and for helping her succeed when she is in a socially awkward situation. She plans to go to the University of California, Santa Cruz and will be studying Psychology and Kinesiology.

I think anyone who knows Tara would agree that she is the person you make eye contact with whenever someone is acting like an idiot. She is also one of the most caring people I have met at Webb, and she is always willing to help someone out if she knows they are struggling.

After college, Tiffany Chang could be an organic farmer, a ghostbuster, or maybe she will finally understand why she received the superlative of “most tech-savvy.” Clearly, Tiffany is an adventurous spirit. She spent her freshman year in Hangzhou, immersing herself in Chinese culture and language. The following year, she arrived at Webb as a new sophomore and became involved with performing and visual arts, including the dance show, theatre, and media arts. As the current president of Art Club, Tiffany organizes Art Café, in which she displays her photography. Tiffany thanks Mr. Jonathan Capone, the former Media Arts teacher, for sparking her interest in art and pushing her to focus on her passion. On the weekends, it can be tough to find Tiffany as she is often exploring campus and discovering the weirdest parts of Webb. Next semester, Tiffany will explore Pitzer College. There, she will continue to pursue her passions by studying Media Studies with a concentration in film.

When Tiffany is your friend, she is the combination of a clown and a walnut.

A self-proclaimed nerd, Tony Li is passionate about his schoolwork and everything he sets his mind to. While at Webb, he has dedicated himself to his work in order to be successful. He has loved spending his afternoons volunteering at the Raymond Alf Museum. Throughout high school, Tony has focused on getting his work done productively and never screwing around. His favorite teacher has been Jonathan Capone; although he never taught him in class, Mr. Capone was Tony’s advisor for his underclassmen years. When he is not focused on his schoolwork, Tony loves spending time with his friends, running through the dorms, or going on weekend Target runs. Tony’s friends have made his Webb experience memorable, and he knows that he will miss chasing them through the dorms when he goes to college. Although he is sad to leave them, Tony is excited to major in Engineering at Yale University, where he will be able to expand on his love of math and physics.

Although Tony Xiong may seem quiet, he is truly a people-person. Some of Tony’s favorite experiences at Webb have been giving tours to prospective students or helping out at Revisit Day because he loves getting to know new people. Along with being an Admissions Fellow, Tony fondly remembers participating in a High Altitude Research Program with his friends, in which he sent a high altitude balloon into the Earth’s stratosphere for fun. When he is not busy launching balloons, Tony likes hanging out with his friends and playing card games like Speed. He is the team captain of Webb’s rookie robotics team, and loves having the ability to turn his ideas into reality. Tony will miss the small community that Webb offers as he attends the University of California, Los Angeles next year. However, he is very excited to study Economics and hopefully start his own technology business in the future.

Tony is the most complex being I know. He’s a great friend who’s willing to listen and offer funny remarks to make your day better. On the other hand, he’s also not afraid to have fierce debates with you about moral values and why he doesn’t want to eat pizza.

“Fun-loving, spunky, and outgoing” are just a few words that capture the essence of Vanessa Casillas. Her smile brightens any room she walks into and her laugh is absolutely contagious. Whether it be jamming out to “Day ‘N’ Nite” by Kid Cudi, obsessing over the controversial After book series, or dining at Din Tai Fung, Vanessa will be right by your side through it all. One of her favorite memories from Webb is giving her chapel talk. Vanessa has big plans for her future and she is never afraid to be who she is. In the fall, she will be packing her bags and moving to San Diego, CA. Here, she will study Political Science at the University of San Diego. Within the next five years, Vanessa hopes to attend law school in the United Kingdom and be in a happy relationship with her British boyfriend.

Victoria Mirzayantz is a dorm prefect and a JV tennis co-captain. She really enjoyed playing tennis at Webb for three years and helping lead the team. Coming to Webb as a new sophomore, her favorite event was Theme Nights because it helped her create new bonds and meet new friends. On the weekends, Victoria likes to explore LA and watch movies with her friends. In a few years, Victoria can see herself at the beach in Italy, brainstorming ideas for a new project. Her favorite saying is by Mary Engelbreit: “If you don’t like something, change it; if you can’t change it, change the way you think about it.” Victoria is very interested in how media affects society and she wants to study it, and then get involved in the entertainment industry. Victoria will be attending Northeastern University in the fall to study Communications, Media, and Cinematic Studies.

Victoria is kind, hard working, and loving especially to her family and friends. There’s not one one day she does not order out, though she also works very hard! She is perfect!

Willy Martinez is an extremely active participant in the Webb community. He is head prefect of WSC dorms and a dedicated member of both the varsity basketball and volleyball teams. Willy has especially cherished this past season on the volleyball team, because he feels like the team truly connected this year, as they came together to win the League Championship. He loves the Alamo dorm, and has fond memories of the taco nights and hot dog nights he has relished since his sophomore year. Willy enjoys Art Café and Webb Day, but his all-time favorite event is Jubilee – he even designed the shirts this year. With his favorite musical group being Twice, Willy can be found performing K-pop dance moves with his friends anywhere on Webb campus. His commitment to community makes it no surprise that he plans to be a teacher in the future. Willy is particularly interested in studying Developmental Psychology and discovering “why humans do what” as he attends Santa Clara University next year.

His head’s in the game, but his heart’s in the song.

Wing Chow is a dorm prefect and is a true presence as a libero on the WSC volleyball team. Wing loves his teammates for their spirit and effort they put in every game, and he plans to spend more time with his friends as senior year comes to an end. His favorite event has been, as he said, “LA Times! LA Times! The food and performances were always good.” He also participated in robotics for all four years, where he has seen dozens of confused freshmen come in and need constant assistance and guidance. Wing loved robotics because he was able to create a robot from just a dream; his experience showed that he can make anything from just his thoughts and imagination. Wing will follow his passion to Northwestern University where he plans to explore different engineering fields. Wing is sad that he and his friends will split, but is excited to have new experiences on the Midwest.

How does one describe Winona Dodds? One of the most energetic, loving, and spontaneous people in the class of 2019. In an environment that too often focuses on the negative, Winona should be considered a diamond in the rough. Her bright energy helped her stand out in varsity tennis, where she has been the only four-year player. On the weekends, Winona can be seen in her car, rapping Big Sean from a color-changing-speaker while a Snoop Dogg air freshener bobs back and forth to the ebb and flow of traffic. Next year, Winona will be packing up and shipping out to Oregon where she will attend Lewis and Clark College to study Psychology and Neuroscience. Based off her zeal, Winona will undoubtedly bring a ray of light into cloudy Portland; while she is excited to leave us, SoCal will miss her lively spirit in the fall.

Winona’s energy is infectious, she’s super kind and happy and that follows her everywhere.

With Woosuk Kang, there is no in-between – either he is in his room playing League of Legends with friends or he has vanished from the campus on weekends to go to the Claremont Village or the 99 Ranch Market. Woosuk was affectionately called a “stud” in Ben Chai’s chapel talk. He loves his class with a passion because of the connection he experiences during class events, such as Theme Nights or retreats. He loves the dances after Theme Nights for the energy that his class exudes and the “hype.” Woosuk would not have made it through Webb without one of his favorite shows The Office. Woosuk will attend the University of Michigan to study Data Science next year. He wants to pursue his major because it is a field that will allow him to safely secure a job and because he generally loves math.

Woosuk is a kind soul who is the perfect mix of banter and hard work.
