Class of 2021 Senior Issue

Abbie deserves an Academy Award for Best Directing. Whether she was tasked with student government responsibilities or creating conversations for diverse voices at Webb, Abbie directed it all during the pandemic. As busy as she is as the VWS all-student president and member of the Empowering Student Voices Initiative, Abbie still has time to work in theater tech and worry about “Attack on Titan” cliffhangers. Neither dropping a stage light nor witnessing a hole punched into a hotel wall would disrupt Abbie’s hard work, though those events may leave her laughing uncontrollably. Her love of sharing untold stories through film and her dedication to Webb’s diverse community has led her to study Film and Political Science at Scripps College in Claremont, CA. As a biracial, queer woman of color, Abbie looks forward to advocating for representation in media and reforming education in schools. Tune in with Abbie in five years when she leads political conversations or directs film sets for her own movies.

Aidan Boyle is an actual Gaul. Many may know Aidan from the time he dressed as the school’s former mascot. With a handmade costume featuring chainmail, a cape, and sword, he was the front of several school posts displaying his spirit. But aside from that, you can usually find Aidan either in his dorm room grinding away different high skilled videogames such as Ark or Destiny 2, or spending time in the robotics room as a builder, busy preparing for upcoming competitions. His favorite quote is an oxymoron, “Never lucky” as he is notoriously lucky in most games. Aidan enjoys spending time with his friends, Massimo Rabida (‘21), Dean Woelfle (‘21), and Cristian Rosales-Cardenas (‘21) online due to the pandemic, but while on-campus he always sought out Target trips to get a change of pace. One of his favorite moments from the pandemic was a match of Among Us with a group of senior boys that was pure chaos, but he simply enjoyed the energy from the match. Aidan’s favorite Webb events were Webb Day from sophomore and senior years. Aidan’s true passion appears in the science labs where he thrived in junior year studying in Dr. Beikmann’s AP Biology. He will be attending University of California Santa Cruz next year, where he will study Biology and hopes to attend graduate school afterwards.

Aidan and I both share the same drive for achieving our goals whether that be online playing games together or in-person.

Known as the doubly punctual and chill guy around campus who loves watching Quentin Tarantino movies, Alex Huen is the guy you want to be friends with. As a boarder, Alex spends his free time at Webb ordering Five Guys and playing video games in the lower McLeod dorms. His favorite event at Webb is Jubilee because of the fun atmosphere as well as the opportunity to try different cuisines. With his extensive background in taste testing different foods, Alex remains faithful to his favorite food — donuts. In fact, if Alex could choose to become any food, he would be a donut, but the exact flavor depends on the day. He relished his time putting together Jubilee events as an international student liaison for the past two years and has also played water polo for the past four years. In the fall, he plans to bring his passion for cuisine and playing the guitar to the University of California Berkeley, where he intends to major in Economics with a minor in Computer Science.

I was always a bit late to class my junior year. So whenever Alex would see me walking to class, he would know I was late and then start full-on sprinting to class.

If you do not know Alex Xiao “All Too Well,” then just know that he has a “Perfectly Good Heart” and is one of the biggest Taylor Swift and One Direction fans you will ever meet. Alex is a bright presence on campus and an overall optimistic person who views life through a positive lens. His “History” at Webb includes winning the league championship sophomore year in volleyball, dominating Webb Day/Night with his class, and supporting his friends in his favorite Webb activities including Jubilee, Webb Idol, and Theme Nights. As an avid Swifty, Alex not only uses his critical thinking skills to detect easter eggs in Taylor’s songs and music videos, but also in all his classes, including his favorite: Honors Stories & Strategies of Entrepreneurs. While this is the “End Game” for Alex’s time at Webb, he will not forget the tight-knit community, where he loved getting to know every student and faculty member on campus. Alex is “…Ready for It” and planning to change the world through helping other people with his own creations and innovations. Next year, he will be attending New York University Shanghai to study Business and Marketing.

Alex is goofy, energetic, and all the teachers, who are like his friends, love to roast him. Overall, he is hilarious, loving, and a baller.

A multi-sport athlete, day student prefect, big-time K-drama fan, supportive friend, science enthusiast, and amazing poet and writer: Alice Phung can do it all. Alice is fearless and challenges herself on a multitude of levels, whether by pushing herself in basketball, tennis, or swim; watching The Shining at a drive-in movie despite being terrified of horror movies; or even attempting improv in a debate in Fundamentals of Composition. Although Alice appears to have a packed schedule, she loves the simplicity of listening to music on the way home from an away game and grabbing fast food with her friends. Her inclination toward simple things is also shown through two of her favorite cartoon movies: The Good Dinosaur (which made her cry) and The Croods. Alice cares about all those around her, which has inspired her to go into the medical field. Next year, Alice will be attending the University of Southern California, where she will study Pre-Med.

Alice is the kindest person out there and always seeks to bring others into the conversation. Maybe you know Alice for her love of boba or sushi, but you probably did not know that Alice is a prolific TikTok dancer and a wonderful poet.

Alicia Jaqua is an artistic goofball who always knows how to have fun. Born in Japan and raised in Peru, this track star took Webb on with a brave face her freshman year and has not stopped exploring her interests. When Alicia is not pole vaulting for Webb’s track team, she loves to have a good laugh with some of her favorite TV shows: BoJack Horseman and South Park. If she is given the aux, you would be sure to hear some reggaeton from favorite artists Bad Bunny or Temple Sour, a Peruvian reggae band. Alicia loves going outside, as she spends her time hiking and people-watching in big cities. Alicia can be energetic but also enjoys her time to reflect through some of her favorite past-times: drawing and poetry. As a new dorm prefect this year, one of the things she will miss most from Webb is how it felt to wake up on an early, quiet morning in the dorms. Although she will miss the sunny California beaches, Alicia is excited to meet new people, continue pole vaulting, and study physics when she attends Lewis and Clark University in Portland, Oregon.

Having a friendship with Alicia is like the South Park series, you can always count on it to never end.

Alivia Du breathes fashion. On a typical day, she struts around campus in her 4-inch combat boots and raves about vintage Vivienne Westwood corsets. To Alivia, fashion design is not only a hobby but has become an important part of her career path, as she will be studying fashion design at School of the Art Institute of Chicago (SAIC) next year. Living by her favorite quote, “Nothing in moderation,” by her friend Annie, Alivia stans Team Edward from the movie saga Twilight and plays basketball in Jordan 1s. When she is not talking about old rom-coms, Alivia has a strong voice in political issues. Her trip with Webb to the LA Women’s March in her freshman year gave her a political awakening and introduced her to social activism. Alivia started Webb impatient and eager to figure everything out. Now, she knows that the best, and the most enduring things, take time.

Liv is cool. She doesn’t chase trends, trends chase her. Under her mean face and scary goth fits is pure chaotic goodness. I’m just waiting for her to become famous, so I can be her manager.

If you are having a great day, expect Aliza Tyndale to be there to share your excitement with her unbounded energy and self-made, quirky emojis. If you are having a miserable day, she would also be there to cheer you up with her not-so-funny jokes and a pure heart. From the benches outside Appleby, to the park across from her house, or the dreamy California beaches where she spends time listening to music and reading, Aliza’s presence always bring a unique energy to brighten up the world. As an active member of ESVI and a strong fighter for racial justice, Aliza sees her growth through the years and is hoping to continue her fight against discriminations. As she takes her talents to Chapman University this fall, Aliza is hoping to either establish or join clubs that advocate for racial equality. Inspired by her favorite class Honors Poetry & Power and her favorite teacher Mr. Hansen, Aliza is anticipating a film major in order to prepare for her journey as a screenwriter or producer. As she says, “I do what I do to make wherever I am a better place,” there is no doubt that Aliza has made Webb, as well as those around her, much better than she found them.

Aliza always keeps me laughing. She’s witty and sarcastic, sharp and stealthy. While she’s funny, she’s also caring, sweet and thoughtful. I really don’t know what I would do without her.

Simple numbers and dollar symbols opened a vibrant world for young Amir Afzali, an interest he would implement into his extracurricular endeavors and future aspirations. Amir’s funny and caring personality reveals values of family roots and community. Amir has discovered ways to invest his talent with finance by co-founding the Webb Investment Club, and spending time building his skill set to prepare for any venture he would pursue. Amir co-founded Artisan Esports Asia, an organization that promotes members who compete in an international gaming tournament and grow their social media presence. His humorous and kindhearted side is especially observed by his family, where he shares similar musical interests with his father since childhood, including Queen. A perfect afternoon for Amir would include a seat facing the beach, cold iced tea in hand, and Daniel Caesar playing. When Amir goes to Babson College, the comfort of being home and the friends he has made will always bring some nostalgia, but he remains excited to explore the Boston area, a place he has visited a few times and loves. Webb’s kind and generous community has turned Amir into an outgoing person, and ready to meet new friends in a college environment.

I remembered the nights when we ate bread that was stacked with Nutella after finishing computer science homework in my room at 2 a.m. Initially, Amir laughed at me for being fat, but he changed his mind later and started eating ‘healthy’ with me.

One does not recommend messing with the amiable Amy Zhong. Even though she is one of the nicest people you can meet, she does have some tricks up her sleeve. As the founder of the Hack Club, she could easily hack your devices in under 24 hours without breaking a sweat. But the chances of her going down the revenge route are slim-to-none because Amy is known as compassionate and kind-hearted around campus. To show, one of her favorite afternoon activities at Webb is community service because of the chance it offered to bond with new and diverse people while simultaneously helping the community. Yet Amy is not all brains, as she has also played badminton every chance she could while at Webb. As she heads off to Harvey Mudd College, she will deeply miss the famous chicken from the Price Dining Hall. But she is excited to try out the chicken at Harvey Mudd while she majors in Computer Science.

Some of my favorite memories with Amy was cooking a lot of food together in Appleby and cutting our own clothes to change up the style.

Andrew Yu learned a lot from his early days at Webb whether it is running through the halls in the dorms or playing card games with his peers, a lot of which he applied to the different aspects of his entire Webb career. For example, Andrew learned the lesson of patience, which he used to help navigate his AP Computer Science class. He also applied the lesson of predictability to his many humanities classes with Mrs. Fisher. When he was not beating his friends at poker or studying hard in his classes, Andrew could usually be found at the museum cheerfully volunteering to curate a lot of the new findings. In the following years, he hopes to have graduated from the University of Pennsylvania and have begun building a career, all while maintaining the lessons he learned in his dorm with friends playing card games.

Andrew reminds me of Sherlock. He remains vigilant about everything and makes great observations of what’s happening.

Andy Zhang’s high school experience has been defined by self-discovery. The ability to choose hobbies and friends that challenge and excite him has not always come easily, and he takes enormous pride in the person he has willed into existence. Andy started Webb as a self-conscious debater, baseball player, and Kanye West superfan. He feels that during this early period, his choices were motivated by pressure, not passion. The turning point came when Andy joined the cross country team his sophomore year; his newfound love of running and endurance sports deepened friendships and pushed him to his physical limits. Andy’s running career culminated in his triumphant (sort of) completion of the Los Angeles Marathon, after which he pivoted his attention to cycling. Already an accomplished rider, he loves working on elaborate schemes to get cars off the road, a dual effort that would make America safer and healthier, and his crew faster. Andy is glad his friend group fits no stereotype; he appreciates complexity and variety. His friends will miss his encyclopedic knowledge of hip-hop and Charlie XCX’s discography but take comfort in knowing that his passion will remain a thorn in the side of industrial modernity for years to come.

Andy is deeply empathetic and caring, he knows how to keep you grounded. When someone is freaking out, he reminds them to slow down, breathe, and take time for themselves.

If you were startled by a blur buzzing by you, chances are it is Angela Xie sprinting down to the loop to pick up her favorite delivery order — a bowl of salmon poke with triple crab meat from Poke Dot. As a dedicated poke aficionado, Angela loves exploring new poke restaurants and aspires to try all of them in the world. Apart from savoring spoonfuls of crabmeat, she also enjoys frying mushrooms in the Price Dining Hall with the panini grill, to the disapproval of the dining hall staff. In fact, many of her favorite Webb memories occurred in the dining hall, where she played Werewolf, a social deduction game similar to Mafia, with her friends on the weekends. However, no Webb moment trumps blasting K-rap music in her Appleby room and rapping along with her roommate Joslyn Lo, with Kid Milli being one of her favorite artists. Outside of Webb, Angela loves going to escape rooms and haunted houses, where she is the calm one laughing at her terrified friends screaming their lungs out. Next year, Angela looks forward to heading to Emory University to study either Finance or Media Studies.

She brushes her teeth for like 10 minutes, like she just sits there and brushes her teeth while being on the phone. It’s pretty confusing.

Angeline has many plans for herself in the future. She plans to study either Human Biology or Public Health at Stanford next year with the goal of working in pharmacology. However, her interest in political science leads to other paths. She feels that learning about public health will be a good bridge between her scientific and political ventures, as it will give much insight into the types of reforms needed to improve the health system. At Webb, she led the Honor Cabinet. Having been a member since her junior year, she sees the HC as an essential pillar of the Webb community and is very honored to be a part of it. A piece of advice she wants new freshmen to know is to go with their gut, but Angie also cautions against trying too hard. Angeline recommends not going too far out of your comfort zone and knowing where your boundaries are. As Angie heads to college, she will miss Price Dining Hall’s chocolate chip cookies, which were an integral part of her Webb experience, and hopes to find other cookies at future institutions that might come close to rivaling Webb’s.

You know the trend about friend groups where one looks like they could kill you but is a cinnamon roll, one looks like a cinnamon roll but could kill you? Angie is the friend who looks like she could kill you but is a cinnamon roll. She stands confidently on her own as well as with others. Her presence is therapeutic, as she is not one to judge and speaks honestly and thoughtfully. For these reasons, she is the wisest cinnamon roll you don’t want to mess with.

Anh Le is a comforting presence to be around. His jokes, authenticity, and thoughtful personality have all helped him foster deep connections with classmates. Playing JV Badminton, dorming in Alamo during sophomore year, and taking AP Chemistry with Mr. Jurczak make up some of his highlights at Webb, because of the lively dynamic with friends. When he heads off for college, he’ll miss things like fun days in class and the strong support system from the amazing faculty and staff. Anh spends his weekends ordering food with friends, watching k-dramas on Netflix, and playing video games. From Ho Chi Minh City to Claremont, and now Boston, Anh will be taking the next steps on the East Coast. There, he will pursue Biochemistry at Boston University as a pre-med student. In five years, you might find Anh taking on his first year of medical school on the long path to becoming a surgeon.

It’s just his general presence. He’s really comfortable to be around. He doesn’t judge people.

Spotted in Claremont, CA: was it not just four years ago when fashion lover Anjali joined the Webb community? As a fashion entrepreneur, dancer, and New Yorker at heart, Anjali’s influence at Webb is worthy of her own “Gossip Girl” blog post. Though she is an artist and designer for her brand, ZigZag, created during the pandemic, Anjali is still relatable to every other student who enjoys back-to-school dances and media arts while worrying about grades. She lives a relaxed life but sometimes indulges in sewing, thrifting, and trying new foods. From being vice president of the freshman class to becoming her own boss, Anjali will take her leadership and impact to Parsons School of Design in her home away from home, New York City. There, she will bring her interests to a whole new level through studying Strategic Design and Management. In five years, perhaps various magazines and websites will promote Anjali and her visions, or maybe a certain Humphrey will feature her genius.

Anjali is the best #girlboss babe I know! Every day she’s adding more and more to #herstory. I love the quote Anjali uses every day to inspire her: ‘He asked what’s my favorite position. I said, CEO.’ As the #futureisfemale, I can’t wait to see where she goes and what she does.

Determination and spirit join in the best possible way to create Ashley Cox. With a positive attitude and a smile on her face, Ashley lights up any room she enters. She has been an admissions fellow for two years and a part of the soccer team and musical production for four years. Her favorite times at Webb have taken place anytime she has her friends by her side, and she loves driving around on weekends with them, when she’s not working at Chick-fil-A, of course. Her sense of unity makes her love for Theme Nights strong, and, even when her class did not win, Ashley’s school spirit showed it was worth it. Ashley is all about being herself and invites others to be themselves too, for she believes when you surround yourself with the right people, they will accept you for you. Attending Baylor University in the fall, Ashley is going into Pre-Med, not just because of her love for Grey’s Anatomy but also for her love for helping others. You will see Ashley continue to med school, and as she would say, it would be a great day to save lives.

If you see someone employing different mediums and colors to create beautiful faces in the art room, you are probably looking at Ashley Munguia. Ashley is extremely passionate about art and anatomy and has found a clever way to combine the two studies with the goal of becoming a plastic surgeon. She has a special talent of memorizing biology terms and had fun dissecting sheep lungs, which further fostered her interest in a medical career. She observed that her artwork typically focuses on creating faces; that knowledge combined with an interest in Webb’s anatomy class led her to study Pre-med at John Muir College. Ashley has led her class for two consecutive years as class president and has also found time to participate in school productions, such as Les Misérables her freshman year. Although Webb has provided her with so many fond memories, such as block parties, face paint art, and boba on the weekends, she remains excited for her college life ahead. Ashley will miss the tight-knit class dynamic but is thrilled to meet new people. One piece of advice she would tell her freshman self is to always set aside time to take care of herself.

Ashley is if Alice and Wonderland was a person…she is colorful, funny, sometimes confusing, also scary, but every time I talk to her, she lifts my spirits with her wise and random words and is always someone that I want to remember and keep around.

Within seconds of meeting Bill Zheng, it becomes evident that you are not dealing with your average high school senior. Bill’s drive, curiosity, and unfettered passion for creative thinking are instantly palpable. Outside of the classroom, you can see Bill hanging out with friends on campus or making the trip to Newport Beach to relax. In the classroom, Bill takes his job as a student very seriously, always asking extra questions to get to the bottom of any issue. Since a young age, Bill has been enthralled with numbers; he has used his aptitude in applied mathematics to pursue his passions in electrical engineering, computer science, and finance. Bill’s ability to problem-solve has served him well on the robotics team, and in his position as finance commissioner for student government. Bill will miss Webb’s tight-knit community when he attends UC Berkeley next year. At Berkeley, Bill will be studying Electrical Engineering and computer science, and he also hopes to study Economics as a second major if he gets the chance.

Bill is very authentically jovial and funny, but in his own way. He is not the most expressive but has a very sharp mind and can always come up with a joke about something within a few seconds.

— Mason Letteau Stallings ('21)

Born and raised in Rancho Cucamonga, Brandon Martin could make a TikTok video out of any topic, whether it be about playing baseball with Johnathon Maschler (‘21) or guessing what people wear based on where they live. Brandon, a.k.a. “Bmar,”, lives an exciting yet serene lifestyle. He enjoys re-watching Superbad and Dazed, hitting a home run off of Jmasch’s pitches, and his favorite of all, having one a.m. talks with the “boys” down at the Fawcett Library. When Brandon first came to Webb as a freshman, he missed out on many academic and social opportunities. Now, he reminds himself every day that, “If you set your goals ridiculously high and it’s a failure, you will fail above everyone else’s success.” Brandon plans to attend UC Santa Cruz along with enjoying life after high school. Although he is still undecided, Brandon hopes to eventually major in Business and Marketing to potentially create a larger fanbase than the 48 thousand followers he currently has on TikTok.

Bmar is a rider, he won’t turn his back on the few people he lets in. You can count on him for anything. Us becoming best friends was one of the best things of my Webb experience.

For Calvin Xu, Latin has never been a dead language. It is very much alive, inspiring and teaching him to see the world through the eyes of the Romans. Whether he is leading the honor cabinet or independently studying Latin, he always achieves learning “per ampliora ad altiora,” or “from breadth and depth.” Although Calvin entered the Webb community his sophomore year, he has created memorable connections, earning the admiration of everyone through his reputable personality and excessively neat notes. Alongside his dedicated work at Webb, Calvin enjoys the little things in life. If you stay up late enough, you might be able to catch a glimpse of him sneaking into the common room of the Alamo to cook up his daily pack of instant noodles to fuel his late-night study sessions. Looking back on the past few years, his fondest memories include walking down the grassy hill after an intense robotics competition with his friends, or his 2018 Unbounded Days trip to the San Diego Zoo, where he met the elusive serval cat. As he graduates from Webb, he is on the path to major in Computer Science at Stanford University. Embraced in the heart of Silicon Valley, Calvin eagerly awaits to enter college and continue chasing his ambitions carpe-diem-style.

Calvin knows a lot of physics jokes that are bad if you don’t know physics, but they are also bad even if you do know physics.

Carly Granda is a leader. As a day student prefect and the captain of varsity soccer, golf, and the debate team, she juggles multiple responsibilities every day. Carly enjoys these challenging roles because she feels that she learns from having more responsibility; these commitments push her to do her best and give the maximum effort, an inclination that has made her a terrific leader. She enjoys being debate captain the most, as she is responsible for the team’s documents and other preparations for tournaments. Apart from being a leader, Carly values unique moments at Webb, such as going on the peccary trip and stopping by the Price Dining Hall after sports. Outside of Webb, Carly loves Chinese and Japanese cuisine and consistently tries out new restaurants. Next year, as she leaves Webb to major in either Policy Analysis or Political Science at Cornell, she will miss the small Webb community and its people the most. “I know that all my friends are going to be scattered for college. I’ll miss coming down from gym hill and seeing a familiar face,” Carly said.

Carly is a wonderful bundle of energy that exudes brilliance and laughter and warmth. Behind her amazing soccer skills is a thoughtful mind. Frankly, everyone should be a bit more like Carly.

To the South Hutch boarders, Carol Kang was the warmhearted dorm prefect who brightened their moods on stressful weeknights. She rarely gave out work crews, always excused tardy check-ins, and acted as a big sister to many homesick freshmen. However, underneath her sweet smile laid hours of planning dorm activities and efforts to balance personal work with leadership responsibilities, an experience that has taught her selflessness when it comes to putting others’ needs before hers. Aside from South Hutch, Carol was also a big sister to the JV cross-country runners, guiding new members and fostering friendships with teammates. As someone who hates camping, Carol pushed herself out of her comfort zone when she traveled to Catalina Island to snorkel during Unbounded Days her junior year. Despite her initial reluctance, the trip became her favorite Webb experience, especially the memory of night snorkeling and seeing “weird-looking” fluorescent jellyfish. Inspired by her thought-provoking classes with Mr. Gerken, Carol will be pursuing sociology at UCLA next year. As she moves out of Claremont to the metropolis of Los Angeles, Carol will miss the quiet weekends of binging To All the Boys I Loved Before and ordering way too much food.

Carol is the sweetest girl ever. If you are a new student trying to find your way around campus, someone struggling with homework, or a person looking for friends, she will be there for you. Carol might seem a bit quiet but once you get to know her, she will go wild. She is an amazing friend and a Chick-fil-A enthusiast and someone that definitely has what it takes to go far in life.

Have you ever fantastically beat an opposing badminton team as a freshman and subsequently earned the respect from your seniors? Not many people have, but Catherine Lou is one of the few who has. Her dedication to badminton and volleyball throughout her four years at Webb is an example of her stringent work ethic and school spirit. On campus, she is a peer advisor and peer tutor, helping students in any way she can. She has great appreciation for the faculty at Webb, but her favorite is Mr. Caddy. In Massachusetts, she is going to miss her friends Joslyn Lo (‘21), Celine Lau (‘22), Jenna Hawkes (‘21), and Iris Chiu (‘21) as well as the Target runs, workouts, and shopping they did together. If you want to stay up to date with what Catherine is doing, be sure to check out her YouTube channel cat&lyndsey, where she posts vlog-type videos. Next year, she will be taking her Webb spirit to Boston University, where she will take a gap semester in the fall, starting the year in January. She will major in Business, with plans to take over her dad’s company or explore new business markets in the future.

Catherine cares deeply about her friends, and she is really loyal to them. She is funny, approachable, and lively. Outside the classroom, she is still her athletic, excited, and outgoing self.

If you see a guy walking around campus in a black hoodie with the hood up, you are probably looking at Charles Wu. His chill personality and easy-going energy have won him the role of the classmate everyone gets along with, students and teachers alike. Although he may seem aloof, Charles is constantly active on the volleyball courts as a WSC varsity team blocker. On the weekends, one can find Charles at open gym, or watching Breaking Bad or Scarface in his dorm, Reynolds. When he is not on campus, Charles enjoys grabbing his favorite food, sushi, specifically tuna roll, with Logan Zhang (’21) in Los Angeles. Although he is a Beijing native, he prefers Shanghai for its lively lifestyle, but mostly for the newly opened Popeyes. Next year, Charles will be heading off to the bustling New York City to pursue a business-related major at Fordham University, continuing a path in the business world led by his parents. As he leaves the place he called home for four years, Charles will miss the dorm life and seeing Mr. Allan, his advisor and the upper dorm head. Next time you visit NYC, be sure to look out for Charles in the most popular midtown Japanese restaurants.

Charles is a good friend once you get to know him well. He is much more responsible and mature than he seems. But he high-key still need to pay me back.

Although only 18, Cheyaan Jamal has lived many lives: one as a witch in American Horror Story: Coven, another as an FBI profiler in Criminal Minds, and another hanging with Winston and Ferguson from New Girl. When she is not immersing herself in the thrilling worlds of TV shows, she is enjoying the Chipotle pit stops on the bus rides back from soccer games. Her time at Webb has been spent in the classroom with Mr. Choi, enjoying the skits at Theme Nights, bonding with her classmates at retreats, and playing soccer on Faculty Field. The classes Medicinal Chemistry and Advanced Studies Anatomy and Physiology have inspired her to major in Biology and pursue a minor in Spanish at the University of Miami, in hopes for a future career in trauma medicine. While she will miss her friends at Webb, Cheyaan, a Claremont native, is excited to venture outside of Southern California finally; as the youngest of three siblings, she also looks forward to becoming more independent during her time in Miami.

Outside of the classroom Cheyaan is a horror movie fanatic, a movie star obsessor, a fanatic Tiktok sender, an infectious laugher, and an absolute best friend. Don’t fall into the trap of her RBF because you will miss the opportunity to get to know one of the most amazing people you could ever meet!

A Glendora native, Chiara Filart dedicates much of her free time to playing sports and helping others. You will either see Chiara on the volleyball court screaming loud chants for Webb’s volleyball team, at the beach enjoying the sunshine, or in Mr. Gonzalez’s office aiding injured athletes. On rainy days, you will find Chiara singing her heart out to Frank Ocean’s Blonde album or watching Criminal Minds. When Chiara is determined to get something done, she does, whether it be finishing her biology project freshman year or continuing volleyball despite getting injured. After Chiara’s injury, she became inspired to make a difference in others’ lives by helping them get back to playing the sport they love. Chiara plans to take her talents to the University of Hawai’i at Manoa, where she will major in Kinesiology and continues to live by the mottos “Grades aren’t everything,” and “Don’t procrastinate.”

No funny quirks but, most people say she has bad RBF. It’s hilarious because she’s so nice and personable once you get to know her.

Whether you have known Chris Arzate for a day or for a year, his random energy and chaotic sense of humor always catches you off guard. Chris’s friends describe him as compassionate, hardworking, and just a little bit crazy. You will feel his kindness and generosity as soon as you meet him, and it does not stop there. Chris is one of the founding members of the Gauls for Kids Club, an organization that helps local kids with meals, as well as donates to cancer research. When not helping his community, Chris loves to play football and hone his pole-vaulting skills. If you are ever in the Claremont area, watch the skies, as you might catch a glimpse of Chris in his Cessna 172 on his way to obtaining his pilot’s license. When not in the sky, Chris loves to watch Rick and Morty and is an avid Foo Fighters listener. Chris grew up in Upland, California, and is awaiting notice from the U.S. Naval Academy regarding his admission, where he hopes to obtain the necessary skills to become a pilot.

If you are looking for a partner to appreciate the journey of life, not just the destination, Claire Diepenbrock is your girl. Although she has enjoyed securing a reputation for herself as a strong defender on the soccer field, Claire says that her favorite memories with the team come from the bus rides to and from games — the moments that bring deep talks and unique bonding experiences. This view on life is a lesson Claire shares as a leader at Webb, both with her Freshman Seminar class as a Peer Advisor and at the WCC as the Editor of Media. As someone who cherishes time spent with others, Claire loves spending her free time driving around with friends and laughing in the library, moments she documents through another one of her passions, writing. Following this interest, Claire looks forward to studying English with a concentration in writing at the University of California, Davis, where she plans to continue making memories and living in the moment as she works her way towards graduate or law school.

On the first day of freshman year, Claire made a joke that we would become best friends because we both said our favorite show was Pretty Little Liars in an ice breaker activity… I think this is proof manifestation works.

If Clifford Khowara sets his mind on something, he will get it done, whether it be working out every day with Alfonso Alvarez (‘23) or maintaining a healthy diet during quarantine. Cliff came to Webb in the beginning of his junior year as a boarder from Indonesia. When he joined the community, he loved meeting new people, such as Chris Arzate (‘21), whom he now calls his lifelong friend. On Webb’s football team, Cliff plays by the motto, “Don’t be that guy who tries too hard at everything,” yet he still finds a way to be one of the best athletes on the field. Cliff plans to attend Geroge Washington University, major in Political Science for his undergraduate’s degree, and attend Law school for his masters. When he moves to Washington next year, Cliff will be finding a way to play rugby in his spare time. After graduating college, Cliff plans to pursue a career in law or politics.

Cliff is crazy and cool and always knows how to cheer me up if I’m feeling down. Cliff is a great guy to be around and he’s one of my best friends.

Chances are, you will not find anyone else with the same devotion to robotics as Cristian Rosales-Cardenas. With four years with Team 359.exe under his belt, he is fascinated by the computer sciences and robotics. Cristian cherishes his friendships at Webb, and you might find him relaxing or hanging out with friends in his free time. While hanging out with any of his friends, Dean Woelfle (‘21), Joey Silva (‘21), Abbie Arroyo (‘21), Marshall Olmos (‘21), or Isabel Flores (‘21), he might casually throw in his saying, “to monke or not to monke,” which is a parody on “to be, or not to be.” Native to Rancho Cucamonga, Cristian also enjoys riding through trails on his bike and binging Futurama or Mob Psycho 100. Likewise, as a peer advisor, Cristian shares his buoyant, approachable personality with Webb’s community. Luckily, Cristian will be boarding at Pitzer College in Claremont, so he will stay connected with his old friends, while also making new memories and meeting new people.

Cristian is smart, but he does not take himself too seriously. One of his best qualities is that he can take a joke about himself, and he always reciprocates joyful energy around his friend group.

J.A.R.V.I.S., pull up all files on Dahlia Chiu! Agent Dahlia Chiu, a boarding student from Diamond Bar, has spent her time at Webb watching Marvel movies and the Food Network as well as sleeping on the stools in the Appleby Dorm after getting locked out of her room at three a.m. She plans to attend New York University next year as a Liberal Arts major, and she hopes to transition into the entertainment industry, specifically film and animation production. Her interest in the entertainment industry has grown from immersing herself in movies and TV shows, some of her favorites being Thor: Ragnarok and The Falcon and the Winter Soldier. Dahlia’s favorite superhero and villain are Captain America and Loki, primarily due to the “beautiful” actors, Chris Evans and Tom Hiddleston, who play them. At Webb, Dahlia is the senior editor of the yearbook and enjoys events like Webb Day and the Welcome Back assembly. Although she loves Webb 3000, Dahlia is excited to explore the bustling city of New York and live on her own.

Whenever Dahlia tries to recount a funny story, she cannot stop laughing. Her laugh is so contagious, and you can’t help but laugh with her even though we may never get to the end of the story. Her energy around people she loves is so genuine and through the roof. I love how honest she is and how she loves so deeply. She gives the best hugs and I really miss seeing her face light up when she greets people.

Dean Woelfle is, no doubt, the fastest man on campus. He has been running on varsity cross country since his freshman year, winning races and running marathons, something he never expected of himself before he came to Webb. As he approaches the end of his high school career, Dean is going to miss Webb’s cross-country program, from his friends on the team on to his coach, Mr. Caldwell, who supported him all four years. He will also miss Webb Day, where he proudly says he placed 1st in Just Dance although he never played the game before. He also fondly remembers getting first in Zombie Apocalypse. He does regret not participating in activities like these more and gotten to know people earlier, but Dean has grown more as a result of that understanding. He hopes to use what he has learned to build more connections at Haverford College. While he remains on the west coast, he loves just going out with friends to relax and playing games. He will miss his friends the most and hopes that the transition to a new school will be easier than when he transitioned to Webb. “😂🤣😎🤯” is Dean’s favorite quote which he wanted to make sure was included, something he loves to live by.

When I first met Dean, he took my breath away—by his talent, his brilliant wit, his effortless panache, his inescapable charisma. Then I went running with him, and then he really took my breath away.

Even with only two years at Webb under her belt, Dora Csonge has managed to seamlessly become the face of the school’s athletic program. Having been on Webb’s basketball, volleyball, track, and football teams, Dora’s passion for sports stems from her love of being active and keeping fit. Thus, it is no surprise that her favorite Webb memory was her Unbounded Days trip to Catalina Island, where she went scuba-diving and met plenty of new people, many of which are now some of her close friends. Beyond her immersion in sports, Dora loves to plunge herself into new things; her favorite class, Advanced Studies Existentialism and the Human Condition, has made her more interested in the humanities, leading her to choose philosophy as a potential minor in college. However, Dora will always consider herself to be a “science person.” Next year, she will be attending Pepperdine University and majoring in Biology, as she aspires to become a doctor just like the rest of her family. When she heads to Pepperdine in the fall, Dora will forever cherish Webb’s close community, engaging humanities curriculum, and all her weekend outings to the Claremont Village with her best friends.

Dora reminds me of Dora the Explorer because she has an adventurous soul and a heart of gold.

If you notice someone dozing off next to you in Mr. Dahler’s Linear Algebra class, chances are it is Elaine Shao being lulled to sleep by the sonorous tones of Mr. Dahler’s 160-word-per-minute speech. Outside of class, you can usually find Elaine at either Appleby’s or North Hutch’s lounges. Among all the dorms Elaine has lived in as a boarding student, her favorite is Appleby because of its tight-knit atmosphere and the opportunity to bond with her classmates. In her free time, she loves to binge-watch shows like Chinese and Korean dramas and play video games, such as PUBG and Honor of Kings with her friends. Apart from the dorm life, one of Elaine’s most memorable Webb moments was when she went to an immigration asylum during Unbounded Days and listened to stories told by immigrants from Syria and other countries. Next year, as Elaine heads off to Wellesley College in Boston to study Economics, she will miss the Webb life: sitting in front of Appleby dorm with her friends, taking food trips to Arcadia or Claremont Village, and having instant noodles for lunch.

She hates converse because tying shoelaces before running to class is too much work.

In Elena Tieden’s freshman year, the young flutist was kindly asked to leave Orchestra, as she tried to comeback after a hiatus. Despite a tough start, this history-lover has made the most out of her time at Webb. Hailing from Bay Area, Elena embodies Webb with her varied passions and numbered activities. As a member of the Honor Cabinet and debate captain, she involves herself heavily in the community. Beyond her academics, she enjoys dancing, hiking, and watching SNL, but her biggest passion is eating delectable food. Any time Elena is on her phone, she is checking out Taste Made Japan’s new post, and, on weekends, she is finding good eats at the Claremont Village in search of that picture-perfect plate of sushi. Next year, she’ll continue the search but in Chicago’s Hyde Park neighborhood as she studies History at University of Chicago. Although she looks forward to higher education and trying out new restaurants, she will miss California’s sunny weather and her friends. And to think, her story began with leaving orchestra.

Elena must be compared to one of her favorite things in the world: strawberry rhubarb pie. Frankly she isn’t purely sweet (and that is meant in the best way possible). She’s a little sour with some pessimism because she really cares about bettering this world and the lives of her loved ones…All of this is wrapped up by a toasty, warm crust, forming a truly caring, honest, intelligent, thoughtful person, who is always there to offer comfort and advice.

Elizabeth’s Webb experience has led her to live life through two mantras: “choose your friends or people that you interact with based on healthy relationships,” and “just because you’re accurate doesn’t mean you’re interesting,” a quote from John Mulaney that inspires her. Elizabeth’s hobbies and aspirations guarantee that she will continue to be interesting for a long time. Her high school journey has branched out among many careers; she has dabbled in the business world and pursued banking internships and currently helps in a medical biotech company. She hopes to major in economics or finance, but her spontaneity reminds her that it is easy to change focus. Art has always been a passion of Elizabeth’s, who has been creating paintings since primary school. Art relaxes and balances her life, and she enjoyed afternoon art at Webb, a structured time to devote to oil paintings. Elizabeth admires independence but fears complete adulthood as she nears college and will miss hanging out with Webb friends on the weekend, sitting on the grass, and eating with her roommate, Angeline Zhang. Elizabeth’s guinea pig, Curry, will accompany her in any adventures she takes, as adorable Curry has made Elizabeth feel like a proud mother.

Elizabeth is fiercely loyal as a friend and extremely devoted to her work as a creator, be it her art pieces, poems, or research projects. It has been a great honor to watch Elizabeth morph into a more self-confident and driven individual over the past four years.

Pursuing music often produces images of classical pieces, orchestral ensembles, and storied concert halls. However, for Eric He, pursuing music involves heavy-hitting beats, neat sound packs, and a head-banging crowd. Eric is the embodiment of Webb; he is a caring dorm prefect and passionate admission ambassador. He loves playing basketball with his friends and competing in badminton on Webb’s varsity squad. However, by night, Eric transforms into a star DJ known affectionately in the dorms as DJ Heehee. He has released over five tracks during his high school career, and he has even gotten some songs on NetEase Music, the Spotify of China. In fact, he is hosting his old school’s prom. As he goes off to the University of Virginia, Eric hopes to study Computer Science or Data Science, while also producing music on the side. While Charlottesville, Virginia is not exactly the city of Shanghai, Eric will transform the state and make Virginians vibe to his beats for as long as he is there.

He gets along with everyone but is always there for you. He is embracing, patient, and genuine… best friend and best DJ.

Ethan Caldecott can always be seen trotting around campus wearing his red Jordan backpack with a football in hand. Ethan played for Gaul’s football all four years and served as the starting quarterback during his final two seasons. Although his senior season was shortened to only two games, Ethan amassed 419 passing yards and six touchdowns on 27 completions. He was on pace to break most of Webb’s single season passing records. His fondest memory was his touchdown pass to Justice Thomas (‘21) to win the game against Riverside Prep. A sociable peer, Ethan’s expressive personality always leads to competitive Madden games and high stakes football scrimmages with his friends, which usually includes a lot of friendly jarring. Although controversial, he claims that he backs up his trash talk. Before “diming” up his teammates at Faculty Field, Ethan would enjoy the hands-on labs in his Advanced Studies Organic Chemistry class and the discussions in Honors Economic Thought in the Modern Age. He found these subjects interesting and felt that these classes appropriately challenged him. These are interests he could decide to pursue in college, but as of right now he is undecided on a major.

Ethan has a unique and complex personality. He can be pretty unpredictable; you never know what he’s going to do, but that’s what people like about him. You have to feel him out.

As a Grey’s Anatomy superfan, Faith Ferry plans to give Meredith Grey a run for her money when she takes on the medical field. A lover of hands-on learning, Faith fell in love with the sciences early on, which ultimately guided her to Neuroscience and AP Biology at Webb, two classes that influenced her decision to major in Neuroscience and Biology on a Pre-Med track at Case Western University. When she is not spending her time exploring the human mind, Faith feels her best dominating the tennis courts and making memories with her close friends on the VWS varsity tennis team. A busy schedule filled with tennis wins and scientific discoveries has helped Faith appreciate the free time she has on the weekends to catch up on sleep and enjoy her mom’s renowned home cooking. She also enjoys watching (and crying to) her favorite movie, The Notebook, where she discovered the quote, “…it’s not gonna be easy. It’s going to be really hard; we’re gonna have to work at this every day,” a motto Faith has and plans to live by, through her loyalty in friendships and determination going into Medical School.

The first time Faith and I hung out we were in kindergarten… she swung from my shower curtain rod, and it broke off the wall and fell on her. That was when I knew I’d never find someone else like her, and we would become best friends.

Cowboy boots and baseball bats. These quintessential accessories may give you an idea of what Gabe Bustamante is like, but he is so much more. Coming from a baseball family, Gabe is naturally drawn to the sport with a pure heart and work ethic that towers over everyone else. When asked about what he does besides playing baseball, Gabe answered it the most Gabe way possible, ‘Watching baseball.’ Despite all the preconceptions, Gabe is shooting to be the first ever professional baseball player from Webb. Also influenced by his family, Gabe is an incredibly faithful Christian that believes God has a path for everyone, which gives him assurance throughout the unknowns. This fall, Gabe will take his talents and athleticism to Central Washington University. Though he will miss his favorite places in town such as Tio’s, In-N-Out, or Vons, he will certainly have a wonderful time in his natural habitat, the nature, whether it’s fishing, on the lake, or off-roading on the trials.  Gabe flashes a radiant smile to say, ‘Welcome to the Show,’ as he proves ‘we all got a little bit of cowboy deep inside,’ just like his favorite song by Cody Johnson reminds us.

Gabe is fearless, relentless in his purpose and will stick with you no matter what. He also gets sad listening to old R&Bs.

For anyone who has spent a good amount of time on Webb’s campus, the chances are quite high that you have noticed Gregory Tolmochow’s distinguished, influential speaking voice that always finds its way of getting into one’s head; and for anyone who spends time in the Day Student Parking Lot, the chances are quite high that you have seen Gregory’s beat-up 20-year-old Toyota Camry. Whether it is at the pool, the robotics room at Chandler Field, or even at the dorms, where he does not reside, it is difficult not to see Gregory around. He is the type of person who can literally be seen anywhere, striking cheerful conversations with virtually anyone as if they have been lifelong pals. Gregory cites Theme Nights as one of his favourite Webb memories as he witnessed his class come together to plan a memorable show. In his free time, Gregory enjoys spending time with his friends on his bike, going to the beach, or just vibing to some good music. Gregory is excited to live in a different part of the country as he prepares to attend Emory University in Atlanta, Georgia, where he intends to pursue Political Science and Economics.

He always has your back… if you go to a desert for three days with no food and water, he’ll drive all the way out there with a grill, popsicles, and burgers to make sure you’re living well.

From scurrying around up in the catwalks to masterfully engineering the light movements in the booth, Helen is a major asset to the technical theatre department. She is both a leader and a role model to newer technicians, and she always maintains her sense of calmness, which is especially hard with first-year students in catwalks. Helen is a jack of all trades, taking on and conquering all obstacles in her way. She has had an exciting Webb experience and is left with no regrets about the decisions she has made. She has also become a model student, impressing all her teachers with her mind-blowing intellect. In her free time, Helen does an array of things, from relaxing in her room to spending time with her closest friends. In the following years, Helen will be attending University of San Diego in San Diego, California.

She kinda reminds me of an elephant—reliable and calm, for the most time.

If you ever find someone doing a backflip in Spanish class and almost hitting the ceiling or doing donuts in the desert with a jeep, it’s most likely Indy Viramontes. Throughout Indy’s life, he’s been following the motto, “Hard work will pay off and everything will work out.” Since the age of six, Indy has been dominating any competition that comes his way, whether it be on varsity football or club baseball, simply by being himself. After graduating, Indy will miss having deep, late-night conversations with his best friends, going fishing with the boys, and, most of all, being able to return home and eat his family’s delicious meals. Indy plans on attending the University of Utah with the Business Scholars Program to explore the challenges in facing companies in marketing and entrepreneurship. With his self-determination and hard-work, Indy knows that he will knock down whatever boulder is thrown in his path.

Indy is the most down-to-earth guy I know. He’s honest with everyone and gives the best advice. I’ll miss my throwing partner, but I am excited to see him bring his competitiveness to college.

Have you met anyone that knows you can pick up broken glass with bread if you do not have a broom lying around at 3 a.m. in the morning? Only Iris Chiu knows this. After a bizarre night of using Hawaiian rolls to help her roommate pick up shattered glass around the room, Iris realized that the skills she learned in theater tech were valuable, since Mr. Valdez was the one who taught her this unique lesson. Besides learning captivating lessons, Iris enjoyed theater tech the most because she made her closest friends there, who had similar interests. She has also transformed Webb through her leadership on the honor council and participation in her favorite classes: Honors Studio Art and Advanced Studies Creative Nonfiction. Besides being expressive, Iris is friendly and will go out of her way to get to know you personally, an aspect of the Webb community that she will miss the most. Next year, although Iris will hopefully not be using bread to pick up shards early in the morning, she will utilize the lessons she learned at Webb at Carnegie Mellon University, where she will be studying Technical Theater Design and Production.

Iris and I met in 2015 during Webb’s summer camp. I remember Iris being super welcoming when I moved into the dorms. She has always been a super kind person who always tries to make people feel very comfortable. Iris is intelligent, thoughtful, and very comical!

Isa Flores is an advocate. As the co-president of Empowering Student Voices Initiative, she has time and time again taken the initiative to educate herself on diversity and social issues. Her leadership has helped drive change on Webb’s campus, most recently in the planning of Dies Mulieres and Men in the Arena. “I think that Webb needed a wake-up call, and I really took charge there,” Isa said. Besides supporting her Freshmen Seminar students as a peer advisor, Isa has offered her kindness and support to anyone who approaches her. But when Isa needs some time off, she heads outdoors. Isa had the most fun ever on the summer peccary trips, sleeping outside and eating meals straight out of a skillet. She also loved her time in Outdoor Activities with Mr. Kalter, who introduced her to climbing, an activity that has remained constant in her life. To pursue her interests in supporting communities and social justice, Isa will be starting at Mount Holyoke College and hopefully studying Critical Social Thought. But who knows, maybe she will change paths completely, grasp back to her seaside California roots, and study Marine Biology.

Isa is fearless, willful, and compassionate! She’s literally one of the strongest people I know.

If you have ever walked past Isabella Shi’s room before school dances, you will likely find a long line of Webbies gathered by her door. With her exquisite make-up skills and her always-here-to-help personality, Isabella has become the go-to person when Webbies need a touch-up. While Isabella is sad that the seniors missed the opportunity to say a proper goodbye, she enjoyed the Appleby small farewell dinner on the eve of Webb’s close-down, when they cooked a meal together with all the leftover food in the fridge. In addition to the close bonds she formed with her dorm, Isabella sees the robotics team as a family after four years together. Not only did she enjoy the creative process of this activity, but robotics also helped Isabella discover new aspects of herself, including her decisiveness and passion for trying new things. Apart from robotics, she has developed a profound interest in architecture since participating in a research project on the Forbidden City in middle school. She finds architecture fascinating, as it is a consolidation of rationality and sensibility. This summer, she plans to intern at an architecture firm, and she will continue her study of Architecture at Carnegie Mellon University.

My favorite memory of Isabella is politely stealing her chicken wings (she makes a pretty good marinade but also it’s basically the only thing she makes) and having deep conversations with her about feminism in China at one A.M. when we can’t sleep. She’s a very caring friend except at exactly 9:42 on Saturday mornings—when my alarm wakes her up but not me and she yells my name repeatedly and gives me the look.

As a 6-foot-4, science-loving senior, Jackson Malicay is head prefect of the upper dorms and a boarding student from Ukiah in Northern, California. Using his height as an advantage, Jackson participated in both varsity volleyball and basketball at Webb. In both sports, he played the position for the tallest player on the court: middle blocker and center, respectively. Outside of sports and friends, Jackson’s free time is spent working on his car, a 1966 Ford Mustang. During his time at Webb, he has enjoyed Casino Night and, specifically, his freshman year homecoming. The combination of his friends Alex Xiao (‘21), Matthew Gaw (‘21), and Charles Wu (‘21) and the television show Parks and Recreation helped him get through Webb. Next year, he will be attending the University of California, Los Angeles where he will study Biology. Going to small schools his entire life, Jackson is not used to the large college campus, but is excited for the change in atmosphere. In five years, he hopes to be making changes in environmental policy.

Jackson perfectly represents someone who drives a 1960’s Mustang.

Jacob Shigenaka could sell you a house anywhere, from the sunny beaches in California to the Shiganshina District on Paradis Island in the world of “Attack on Titan.” A quick thinker with a calm demeanor, he is a businessman at heart who can find the good in everything. Jacob had a rocky relationship with Webb at first, but he used his four years to gain his entrepreneurial skills while enjoying fun times with friends along the way. From playing centerfield in WSC baseball to reselling sneakers, he puts himself to work and enjoys the success that follows. Jacob also knows when to take a break, especially when his snowboard summons him or school dances start playing older J Cole songs. His college years will take him to San Diego State University, where he will continue using his ambitious mentality to study Business. With so much experience already, Jacob’s college years will be the final push to turn his hobbies into a full-time job. If anyone is ever in need of a house in five years, Jacob will be your local realtor to call in the Golden State.

Music fills the room, each note appearing before Jacqueline Cordes’s senses quite literally as she plays a piece on her beloved piano. Whether it be Mozart, Chopin, or Rachmaninoff, Jacqueline’s color synesthesia allows her to connect colors to sounds, while she taps away on the keys. Having roots in Claremont, California, Jacqueline has always had a powerful fascination for the arts, specifically music and languages. Both a polyglot and a pianist, she could simultaneously hold a conversation in Mandarin, while playing the piano without missing a beat. Exploring and questioning the world around her is second nature, as you can catch her frequenting office hours just to practice her Chinese or jamming away to any one of Radiohead’s colorful songs. Jacqueline is also a proud member of the Theater Tech ensemble, recounting funny memories of a taped-up phone to just enjoying afternoons setting up equipment with the crew. Next year, she will continue to reach for the sky and attend her dream school, Pomona College in Claremont to major in Linguistics and minor in Music. There, Jacqueline hopes to master more languages, conquer at least twenty compositions from her favorite composers, and maybe whip up some of her own original songs as well.

I think Jacqueline’s greatest strength is a mixture of passion and dedication. Interests can be lost over time with no persistence to follow it through, but you don’t see that with Jacqueline.

Jake Baiz exemplifies the saying “Measure someone by their heart, not their size,” because of his work ethic and determination. Inspired by his father, a former division one football coach, Jake spends more hours in the weight room or on the turf than in his bedroom. He worked his way up from the junior varsity team to varsity captain, ultimately earning a spot at UC Davis to play divisional one football. As a day student prefect and an active student in his favorite class, IM2 with Mr. Caldwell, Jake brings immense energy to the room and instantly brings everyone together. Jake not only enjoys all his sports practices, but also loved chugging apple juice with his best friends in the dining hall and dominating others in ping-pong though many may disagree. Looking back at the pandemic, Jake overcame anxiety issues and can now better open up to people about his emotions. Speaking about his transition from Rancho to Davis, Jake may be a bit nervous about football but cannot wait for the “athlete on campus” experience. With Jake’s unbelievable work ethic and determination, there is no doubt that he will catch every opportunity coming his way along his journey, just like the footballs thrown his way by the quarterback.

Jake is easily the most hardworking person I know and seeing him put in the work keeps me and so many others motivated. I’m most amazed by his ability to self-reflect to become more mature. I just hope he could actually spend more time to practice ping pong so he doesn’t have to claim other people’s victories.

Jake Sharifi is a lion. As fast as lightning and very quick-witted, he runs a 2:10 in the 800-meter race, plays a starting position on the varsity basketball team, and excels in cross country. His school spirit is strong, which is reflected in his participation in student government for all four years of his high school career. Jake moved up from vice president his freshman year, to class president his sophomore year, executive vice president his junior year, and finally executive president his senior year. Some of Jake’s favorite memories at Webb include organizing school events such as dances and Theme Nights, and going to Honors The World of Shakespeare, a class he took his junior year and loved. Whether keeping up with the stock market or working at Starbucks, Jake is always using his time to advance his knowledge and his love of business. You can catch Jake in a few years going to law school in downtown Chicago and living the dream. Jake will be attending Lake Forest College, located thirty miles outside Chicago, Illinois, and will be majoring in Political Science.

Born in Santa Barbara and raised in the Inland Empire, Jenna Hawke’s California upbringing has instilled a powerful love of the environment and a passionate commitment to preserving nature’s beauty. A people person, Jenna’s most cherished memories involve sharing parts of her life with friends, whether it be her childhood stomping grounds or her unparalleled knowledge of plant and animal life. Renowned for her seemingly limitless enthusiasm and creative drive, Jenna is motivated by a constant desire to learn: in the classroom, on the tennis court, and in her relationships. Early in her Webb career, she felt compelled to get to know almost everyone on campus, an admirable but exhausting goal. Lately, she has devoted more time to forming intimate bonds with a close group of friends, which she finds more fulfilling. Jenna has recently rediscovered musical inspiration, alternating focus between the poetry of indie-folk and advanced guitar techniques. Her prowess as a performer is undeniable, just ask anyone who has attended Jubilee or a Chamber Singers concert. In the fall, Jenna will attend Macalester College in Minnesota, a far cry from sunny California. The freezing Twin Cities will be a difficult adjustment, but Jenna’s energy, humor, and joy will make the challenge worthwhile and rewarding.

Although skin rashes warn Jenny Han against dangerous sands, Jenny’s persistent spirits and dedication to Webb’s Paleontology program have determined the continuation of a childhood dream. From visiting museums as a huge fan of dinosaurs as a kid to reigniting these interests in an academic setting, Jenny eagerly jumps into the sandpits in Barstow in search of new fossils and unforgettable adventures and will venture to Stanford University to continue exploring the beautiful realms of the earth. Aside from the museum, Jenny leaves behind eloquent speeches around campus—from the debate team, the Chapel, tours around campus, to the many Webb science, math, and humanity classrooms. Jenny’s beautiful voices singing along the ukulele will continue to echo through the dorms; her euphonic performances will enchant Liu Cheung for the years to come. Jenny will never again forget her schedule and step into the classroom late, but she will remember to take a breath once in a while as she pursues further education, whether becoming an expert of the earth systems, a forensic psychologist, or a museum curator. Whatever challenges to come, her smile is always the curve that sets everything straight, as she lives by the maxim that actions make dreams come true.

Jenny has been such a great role model for me. She’s so incredibly friendly and has such a great work ethic too–I never even thought of doing homework during lunch until I met Jenny. I also have no idea how such a happy person with such a bright personality can sit through the movie Hereditary and also be trapped in a horror escape room with a bloody doctor and not become a shell of her former self.

Who is that tall guy playing badminton sporting a Robotics shirt, the boarder who checks in every hour at the library because he has too many CBOs? If you have attended at least one math lab, you know it is Jimmy Feng. After teaching you derivatives, Jimmy embraces more of his “students” in line while laughing at funny memes and engaging in conversations from existentialist debates on human conditions to debating with Bill Zheng (‘21) what games to play after lights-out. The violin player who conducts on the stage, the organic chemist who writes Harry Potter fan fiction, the gamer who sings at Jubilee, the classical music fan who watches anime, Jimmy, a Shenzhen native, will attend The University of Chicago this fall to continue writing the 500 pages of Jimmy Feng even when the page doesn’t feel like it, as Mr. Rogers would tell him when Jimmy felt down. When you hear the familiar laughter full of wisdom, wit, and passion years later, it may as well be the future Jimmy Feng, perhaps still a student, perhaps a professor, but still the same wonderfully uplifting and occasionally lousy presence in the classroom.

Creative, dependable, calm, intelligent, and social, Jin Song embodies all of the main characteristics of a Capricorn. Jin enjoys meeting and interacting with new people, especially through his community service work, which proves he can make friends anywhere he goes. Jin likes to stay busy on the weekends with videogames, anime, golf, and old Chinese pop songs. You can also see Jin waving to his peers on zoom with a big smile every class. Jin has consistently been the best golf player on the WSC varsity golf team all four years and can always score the lowest points. He additionally serves the team as a Captain and he enjoyed finding a sense of community among his teammates. Next year, Jin will be attending Carnegie Mellon University and plans to major in either Political Science, Economics, or Information Systems.

Experimental Physics, junior year, was a fun class with Jin because we would mess around a lot while also staying on task. It was fun to hang out with him during that class.

You are walking through Claremont Village and craving some frozen yogurt, perhaps some Circus Animal Cookie or Oreo Cookie Magic. You walk into 21 Choices, and who do you see? Joey Silva, of course! But you may not know that there is much more to this Los Angeles native than meets the eye. Joey is an avid Marvel and Frank Ocean fan who loves spending time with friends, watching drive-in movies, and playing video games. In his time at Webb, Joey starred in two musicals, “Les Misérables” and “Pirates of Penzance,” won Zombie Apocalypse two years in a row, and cultivated a tight-knit friend group that he will miss seeing every day when he goes off to college. Joey also serves as head of the honor committee, where he does everything he can to help students and strives to make the community a better place. It is this philosophy of making things better that led him to study Political Science next fall at Occidental College.

[Joey]’s probably the most wholesome friend. One time I saw him getting interviewed for some Webb promo thing and I was like, they have the right guy, because he’s the perfect poster boy for honor and integrity and stuff.

Whether you know him as Johnathon, Jmasch, or the energetic head peer advisor bouncing around campus, Johnathon Maschler is remarkable. As an active member of the Webb community, Johnathon has participated in three varsity sports, with cross country being his favorite because of the fun trips and close bonds the smaller team fostered. When he is not training for his seasons on long runs, Jmasch spends his weekends “hitting nukes” at the driving range with his friends. After enjoying math classes with his favorite coach and teacher, Mr. Caldwell, Jmasch looks forward to continuing down the field of STEM, when he majors in computer science and engineering at Santa Clara University next fall. Although he will miss his dog and his friends when he heads off to college and graduate school, Johnathon knows he will thrive by following his favorite saying, “Do today what others won’t, so tomorrow you can do what others can’t.”

During freshman year, I always saw this tall, blonde, outgoing, popular kid walking by on campus, and always wanted to be him. When I truly met Johnathan James Machler, I realized he is one unique teddy bear inside…. Jmasch has been with me every step of the way. He is my go to man for advice, my neighbor, my coach, and my best friend.

“Let’s Go!” by DaBaby is the motto that Jonathan Zhang lives his life by. He takes DaBaby’s word to heart when he spends his free time experiencing a variety of different things. He enjoys spending his free time going on adventures with friends, watching Friends for the tenth time, listening to One Direction, watching Mafia movies, playing golf, or researching current events. Jonathan also displayed his golf skills when playing for the WSC varsity team all four years. As co-head of the International Student Liaison, he particularly enjoyed putting together Jubilee 2019, a memorable experience due to the lively preplanning involved. Jonathan will miss the tight-knit community here at Webb and hopes to stay in touch with the friends he has made over the past four years. One word of advice he would give his freshman self would be to be more open to meeting new people. Jonathan plans on using his own advice next fall at Emory University, where he will be majoring in Political Science and minoring in Economics to continue his life-long passion for debating policies with friends.

We have had the tradition of going to Six Flags once a year together and that has always been memorable. Jonathan’s room was also the hangout spot where we would watch movies, play video games, and just hang out.

As the next Pablo Picasso, Joslyn Lo shares that one of her favorite classes was Media Arts taught by Ms. Horejsi because it made her realize her love for art was deeper than just a hobby. In five years, she hopes to have found success in art and to not be a “starving artist!” Joslyn’s “everything-happens-for-a-reason” attitude has stuck with her throughout her time at Webb and has been especially useful during the pandemic because of all the changes brought on this year. Her advice to her freshman self would be to forget about the SAT because she did not even end up needing it for college. In addition, Joslyn also wishes that she did everything she wanted to do before junior year and spent less time stressing over her sophomore classes to simply live in the moment. Originally from Hong Kong, Joslyn will continue her lifestyle as a border next year in college; however, she thinks that living on the Webb campus has something unique behind it. Joslyn will be following her passion for arts by attending Parsons School of Design in New York, where she will be majoring in Illustration.

If I am allowed to say badass then that is what she is, but she really dominates a room when she’s in it.

If you want to feel like the funniest person in the world, you should spend some time with Julia. Julia is not afraid to laugh at anything and everything, regardless of how funny it truly is. From the soccer fields to the theatre, Julia is adored by everyone she meets. She loves to let loose, so some of her favorite Webb memories are of homecoming dances. But as much as she enjoys having fun, Julia is also a formidable student. With a passion for art and math, she plans to combine the two while studying architecture at Texas A&M next year. All the “Aggies” will be lucky to experience Julia’s love of K-pop, “Good Mythical Morning,” and Baby Driver. Though the work required to study architecture is no laughing matter, Julia will surely face the challenges with her usual hilarity and excitement. Julia will miss the California beaches, but is looking forward to experiencing a real Texas rodeo.

Anyone who knows Justice Thomas will notice him cracking jokes and making the best out of every situation, whether it be doing dynamic stretches on the football field, connecting with friends, raining down three-pointers in the Les Perry Gym, or even breaking school records on the track. After completing his freshman year at Webb, Justice gained more confidence and stuck by the motto of “Live life at the moment.” Apart from sports, Justice loves hanging out with his “brothers,” Jake Baiz (‘21) and Ethan Caldecott (‘21), binging One Piece on Netflix, and blasting songs by Drake. Justice will miss going down to the Price Dining Hall after football practice and watching Ethan stack his plate up with food. Justice will take his athletic talents to Westmont College and potentially continue his basketball career while studying Kinesiology. Within the next five years, Justice plans to settle down in Santa Barbara and work in the chiropractor industry.

Justice is one of the most inspirational guys I know. It’s amazing what he can back into just a select few words, even if some of those words are not even in English.

Kaitlyn De Armas is one of the hardest workers the Webb Schools has ever seen; she plays hard and works harder. As Editor-in-Chief of the WCC, Kaitlyn has developed a deep love for the humanities and wants to utilize her skill of writing and her voice to help others. Taking inspiration from her favorite television show, Criminal Minds, Kaitlyn plans to follow her passions all the way to law school. Following her play hard mentality, her favorite sports are varsity softball and soccer, which she played all four years of high school. One of Kaitlyn’s favorite Webb memories was winning Webb Day sophomore year, for she loved seeing her class come together in spirit and unity. On the weekends, Kaitlyn likes to hang out with her friends, driving around and listening to music. Specifically, her favorite songs “You Belong with Me” by Taylor Swift and “Vienna” by Billy Joel are always comforting for her. Kaitlyn’s efforts have paid off, as she will be attending Cornell University in the fall, majoring in Comparative Literature with a minor in Law and Society.

Kaitlyn is someone I’ve always been able to laugh with, she’s been my best friend since day one, and every time I’m with her, no matter what we’re doing, she shows me how fun doing absolutely nothing can be.

Keigan McCullagh will never be silent. Whether she is passionately discussing the Cold War, McCarthyism, or polices of the border wall, Keigan lets her voice be heard in all classes at Webb. During her high school experience, Keigan found a home in theatre tech, where she helped create many of the impressive sets seen during Webb performances. During “Pirates of Penzance,” she and her crew built a 17-foot ship mast that actors could climb up on, and she personally got to help hoist it onto the stage. A defining moment in Keigan’s life occured when she traveled away from Webb to study at the School of Ethics and Global Leadership (SEGL) in Washington D.C.. She remembers learning that she got accepted to SEGL while walking down from the softball field post-practice, bursting into tears of happiness, and celebrating with her Webb friends and teachers who supported her. Next year, Keigan will return to Washington D.C., this time at George Washington University, to study Political Communications, a major which she describes as a “poli-sci journalism communication degree.” Webbies will continue to hear Keigan’s voice in the future when she dominates as either a journalist, political analyst, speech writer, or press person in government.

My favorite thing about Keigan is that she has worn the same exact cardigan since sophomore year. I am pretty sure she wore the cardigan to prom, homecoming, and to her chapel talk. Just the same exact grandfatherly cardigan.

At the end of Kennedy Becher’s first swim season at Webb, she was renowned as “The Freshmen Phenom.” A fast and fierce competitor, Kennedy owns the most swimming records at Webb, with three individual titles and three relay titles to her name. When she is not sprinting in the pool, she can be seen supporting newer swimmers as team captain by demonstrating the strokes; lap counting for her teammate and friend, Laura Haushalter (’21); or leading the classic Webb swim cheer and her personal favorite quote, “Push hard, dig deep, Webb Swim, Webb win.” Outside of the pool, Kennedy spends time weightlifting, fishing, or watching her favorite show South Park. Kennedy will miss the post-CIF dinners at Corky’s Bakery and lifting weights in Functional Fitness. Inspired by her AP Computer Science course, which she finds interesting because it is like learning a new language, next year Kennedy will head off to Oberlin College in Ohio to major in Computer Science while continuing her swimming career. Go Yeo!

Kevin Wang is one in a million. Well, statistically speaking, that means there are 7,000 people just like him. However, Kevin is the outlier. His multifaceted personality and talents shine through his actions, making them known to everyone around him. As president of the Math Club and a devotee of Robotics, Kevin has an instinctive passion for all things math. Whether he is in the classroom or at a competition, math is the centerpiece of the web connecting everything else. At Webb, Kevin also cultivated a newfound appreciation for the humanities, taking more time to explore all facets of history and literature, as well. During his downtime, Kevin unwinds by playing League of Legends with his friends or explore other academic curiosities. Teachers will remember him for his distinctive academic rigor, and friends will remember him for his genuine compassion and witty jokes. After he graduates, Kevin plans to head to the University of Chicago to major in his strong suits: Math and Physics. Perched right by Lake Michigan, he aims to take on anything college will bring on, but no matter what he does, Kevin lives by this sentiment: “As long as we don’t stop, the road will continue…Don’t you ever stop.”

Kevin is a very talented and strong student who is so committed to the path that he is walking that you just start to wonder how far he can go.

Simply put, Laura Caldwell is a people person. She is a great conversationalist who loves to make people laugh and is a kindred spirit for everyone she meets. Laura’s comedic genius shines onstage at Webb, where she often plays overly dramatic, hilarious characters. Her favorite Webb productions were the Chekov-inspired comedies during her sophomore year, in which she played a rather grumpy German actress. Laura also has innumerable passions for things outside of theatre. As a dancer, artist, and singer, she has talent galore. Other Webbies have loved hearing her perform at Jubilee and seeing her work at Art Cafés. These talents will certainly shine at Kenyon College next year, where Laura’s possible courses of study range from anthropology to creative writing, but all have a focus on impacting other people’s lives. Though the cooler weather of Ohio may take some getting used to, Laura is sure to bring the same sunshine and warmth to her future college that she has brought to Webb every day.

I hate using a word as basic as creative, but Laura is actually creative. The best way to describe Laura is just ‘herself’.

If Laura Haushalter is not happy with something, she changes it. At some point during any add/drop period, she was probably in the registrar’s office getting her transfer form signed. Though they may have caused some headaches, these swaps between classes and afternoon activities have been some of the best decisions Laura has ever made. She switched classes to join Journalism, which became one of her favorite parts of Webb — she has loved telling stories for the past two years and is now public editor of the WCC. She switched afternoon activities to do triathlon, introducing her to a love of running that would eventually make her captain of the Cross Country team, another beloved aspect of her Webb experience. Laura has also been captain of the VWS swim team for three years, where she earned her trademark saying, “Just keep swimming.” As well as being a journalist, a runner, and a swimmer (and despite her love for driving), Laura is a devoted environmentalist after a project in seventh grade about sustainability ignited a thriving passion for protecting the environment. She will study Environmental Studies in college, but not before taking a gap year to serve with AmeriCorps.

Laura reminds me of a kangaroo because she’s really playful, friendly, and active. She’s always bouncy, ton of energy, and she has a tendency to leap before she looks, but like, in a good way.

Do not ever let Leo Cheng’s seemingly reserved personality fool you, because those who have had a chance to get to know him would probably unanimously agree to finance a documentary called “Inside the Mind of Leo Cheng.” Born and raised in Hong Kong, Leo grew up speaking Cantonese, Mandarin, and English in one of the city’s elite K-12 international schools. Shortly after arriving at Webb, Leo took up various extra-curricular activities and developed a particular interest in theatre tech, where his valiant behind-the-scenes efforts reflect his real-life disposition, someone who is always willing to do the dirty work that goes unnoticed. Leo is a passionate learner driven by his sheer curiosity rather than mere letter grades and often lets his clever, sharp-witted personality show through his well-coordinated pranks. Any faculty member who has been Leo’s dorm head will recall the times he constructed a mannequin on his bed to scare teachers who were conducting room checks. Leo will be continuing his studies at the University of Rochester, where he is excited to adapt to a different environment and connect with new peers of common interests.

Leo is one of those people who never cease to surprise you. Whether if it’s his absurd dietary interests such as eating spaghetti in ice cream, writing fan fictions about his friends for fun, or taping toilet paper on his ceiling fan to create an aesthetic, his mind always seems to be set on something to distinguish himself.

Known for her classic hoodie, leggings, and Los Angeles Lakers’ hat look, Lily Chiu will always greet you with the warmest hug. Lily has a calming presence; her warmth and kindness to the ones she loves can be felt on any corner of the campus, from the classroom to the South Hutch dorm to the Liu Cheung Theater. Her time living on campus has gifted her with some of her favorite memories: napping with Chiara Filart (‘21) before afternoon activities, blasting The Weeknd’s songs with Vivien Xi (‘21) in the South Hutch shower stalls, or binge-watching over 500 movies after lights out. Outside of the dorms, theater tech with Mr. Valdez had been Lily’s favorite activity; she will always cherish the fond memories of being covered in sawdust, working in the scene shop with her close friends, and exploring parts of campus that were invisible to everyone else. While the people at Webb had made it her home, Lily is thrilled to major in Politics, Philosophy, and Economics in college and cannot wait to learn more about the world.

Lily and I always joke that we are the same person in two different bodies because we both love food, Sebastian Stan, Chris Evans, and have a nonexistent sleep schedule.

Lily Miller embodies “the grind.” Whether it is on the track or in student-led discussions, she puts in the effort to create change. Lily is a vocal leader in her class, which is evident in her work with Claremont Disarm Hate. This co-op youth activist program was founded by Lily and her friend for both Claremont High and Webb students as an advocacy group to curb gun violence. The program has since expanded to include human rights issues following the Black Lives Matter protests. At college, Lily will be running on the track and cross county teams following a record-breaking Webb career. She holds the VWS record for the mile and two-mile races and qualified for the CIF State Championship three times for cross country. She will miss the companionship she had on the Webb teams. Around campus, she enjoyed events like drive-in movies and open pool after finals week. Most of all, she will miss the pure enjoyment of “family dinners” with friends at the dining hall where they would agree to put their phones in the middle of the table and oblige one another to have meaningful conversations. Her passion for humanitarianism will continue at Bates College with plans to study Political Science or Government.

She is always laughing and smiling and has a super bubbly personality. Even when I am in a really bad mood, Lily always makes me laugh. She knows when to have fun and loves to be spontaneous when she isn’t focusing on school or work.

Most people at Webb might know Livia as the girl who is always at the pool, gliding in effortless strokes across the water, lap after lap, on a chilly morning before class, or five p.m. in the evening. However, just like the nature of her sport, the surface splashes and kicks only tell a fraction of her story. She traded the Rocky Mountains for the foothills of Claremont at the age of three and has since called it home. Apart from hanging out with friends on the weekends, such as spending time at the park, visiting the beach, or going on hikes, Livia has a passion for artistic niches such as composing poetry and listening to jazz music. Unbeknownst to many, Livia is also a three-year member of the Chamber Singers at Webb. While she primarily spends time with her close-knit senior friend group and her teammates on the swim team, she especially enjoyed seeing her entire class come together during Theme Nights her sophomore year. As she has always had a burgeoning interest in the psychology behind politics and the cost-benefit analysis, she intends to pursue Philosophy, Politics, Economics at Claremont Mckenna College this fall.

Livia, to put it simply, is an impenetrable force to be reckoned with and her only weakness is Gen Z slang. She literally isn’t human since her “intellectual prowess” and her love for her friends is beyond human comprehension! It’s great having a superhero as your best friend!

Logan Zhang lives life as an embodiment of his favorite quote: “Take destiny by the horns and have fun.” Po’s Kung Fu Panda quote may seem peculiar to some, but Logan has explored so many hobbies and courses that he has indeed discovered his own destiny. He is incredibly passionate about water polo, putting in large amounts of effort to help his team win. He utilized different aspects of Webb life to enhance his experience, enjoying drive-in movies, trips to Target, and exciting classes like Webb’s Age of Enlightenment, where Logan partook in challenging existential odysseys and debated the meanings of good and evil. Although Logan would tell his younger self to consistently turn his homework in on time, he still had fun spending his weekends at friends’ houses and trying new cuisines. Logan wishes he had been able to spend his senior year at school, as he regrets not interacting with the community more, especially as this opportunity was lost due to the pandemic. At Washington University in St. Louis, Logan hopes to pursue even more interests, with a possible major in a science field.

Logan has perhaps been my best friend throughout high school. It’s his untroubled attitude and causal humor that has turned the toughest times into some of the best.

Manek Khedia plans to marry Tom Holland and own many pugs in the future; however, in the meantime, she plans to attend Tufts University in Massachusetts. The course Advanced Studies Global Gender Studies with Dr. Linsley has inspired her to pursue a career in women’s health, whether through attending medical school or working abroad in India to educate girls on sexual and reproductive health. As a Claremont native, Manek has spent her time going to Color Me Mine and Universal Studios with her friends as well as enjoying her mom’s curry and dal, which she will miss as she leaves for college in Massachusetts. As a day student prefect, Manek is very active in the Webb community as she has enjoyed dancing in the Winter Dance Show, laying on the beach with her friends during the 2020 Unbounded Days, and Webb dances in the Ruddick Room such as Sadies. Although Manek will miss her friends at Webb, she is excited to live in a city outside of SoCal and discover the many restaurants in Boston.

She is the master at baked oats (go follow @munchiesbymnm on Instagram!), and she is honestly one of the best people you could meet in your life!

Marshall Olmos has been around. Since discovering his love of cycling during junior year, Marshall has biked thousands of miles of previously neglected San Bernardino, Los Angeles, and Riverside counties. A relentless explorer, he finds his long rides meditative, physically arduous opportunities for reflection on his life and the state of the world. He was not always so adventurous; Marshall says that as a freshman and sophomore, he approached school and socializing robotically, setting himself on fixed academic paths that seemed logical but brought him no joy, and isolating himself from those who later became his close friends. It took tremendous willpower to take himself off autopilot and get to know himself, developing passions for running and cycling on the cross-country team and freeing himself from the rigidity of the hard STEM courses he has taken. Marshall found himself a tight friend-group that knows him as deeply empathetic and a fierce opponent of the Southern California sprawl that limits the chances to encounter the unique, wild places he loves. Marshall will attend the University of California, San Diego in the fall, where he will enjoy sea air and the pleasure of feeding motorists his dust.

Marshall is probably the person in the world most similar to me, because he is incredibly smart, handsome, and funny.

If you can think of a book, chances are Mason Letteau Stallings has already read it. As an avid reader, whether it be fiction or nonfiction, he has brought vast amounts of knowledge to his in-class discussions. He especially enjoyed these conversations in Mr. Allan’s Honors The Press Politics, and American Power. Besides being a leader in the classroom, he also brought his bright intelligence and great ideas to the honor committee, where he helped to make Webb a better place. However, contrary to what one may think, Mason is not always the model student; in fact, he can remember many of his mistakes. The one he is most fond of is when he was running down the hill next to Alamo and ended up breaking his arm. When Mason is not reading exciting pieces of literature or having intellectual conversations with his friends, he enjoys being a part of the Sea Cadets. Mason went through the rough and rugged training, giving him a taste of what a U.S. Marine goes through. He found his love for the military during this time, and it helped keep him in shape. He is looking forward to attending Washington University in St. Louis, where he plans to do a double major in History and another undecided subject.

He is pretty much all knowledgeable.

Massimo Rabida is the comedy king from Hacienda Heights. As the funniest man on campus, he is a stellar peer advisor that entertains his students with his light and humorous teaching. When asked what mistakes he made at Webb, Massi says in a sarcastic tone, “I’m not a very flawed person,” giggling the entire time. His favorite Webb event had to be sophomore homecoming because he saw one of his favorite teachers, Mr. Huerta, dance in the corner as a chaperone. He has spent plenty of time with his advisor, coach, and teacher Mr. Huerta. Massi is excited to study Neuroscience in college and hopefully transfer from Cal State Fullerton. After witnessing how mental illness has affected his family, Massi hopes to go pre-med and become a doctor of neurology so that he can personally understand the subject matter to help others. In five years, you should expect Massi to still be studying neurology in graduate school where he hopes to further his understanding of the brain and how we develop.

Matthew Gaw contemplates a great deal on his three-hour bike ride up Mount Baldy with Gregory Tolmochow (‘21): his Webb basketball career, the cramps in his legs, or who would win the next Super Smash Bros tournament that he and Jonathan Zhang (‘21) hosted in their room. Perhaps he even thinks of his sophomore year Webb Day, where the class of 2021 took home first prize. Matthew’s favorite part of that day was the incredible teamwork that his classmates showed, but this should come as no surprise; Matthew is a team player through and through. Whether it is on the basketball court, in the pool for a water polo match, or onstage in Liu Cheung, Matthew strives to support his teammates in any way possible. Though he will certainly find a new team to play pick-up basketball with at the University of Pennsylvania, nothing will ever beat the Friday night walk up to open gym with his friends.

Matthew is super adventurous. He makes me do things that I wouldn’t choose to do by myself, but I always end up having a really good time.

Not many high school seniors can say they have a Junior Olympic gold medal. But not many high schoolers are Max Fargo. As an avid water polo player who competes in club and varsity athletics, Max´s favorite spot-on campus is the gym. Atop the hill, he either works out with weights for water polo or hones his basketball skills on the open courts as a varsity basketball player. When the gym is not open, Max makes his best memories on Alamo Lawn, throwing the football around with his friends. Afterwards, he relaxes to one of his favorite J. Cole songs and an episode of Malcolm in the Middle. But Max is not just about sports; he still finds time to give back to his community. Whether it is cheering on his team during Webb day or working on the Honor Cabinet, Max deserves a gold medal for his contributions beyond athletics. Webb has been his home for the past 4 years as a boarder, but the Redlands native is excited to move out of his comfort zone and explore what college has to offer.

When I look at Max, I see Connor McGregor. Not only because that’s his idol, but because he embodies the great athlete and man McGregor is…he sticks with you through the good and bad just like the Ol’ Irishman.

If you want to splatter paint to classic rock music with someone, Maya Dholakia is your girl. Originally from the Bay Area, Maya was born in Berkeley and raised in Oakland, before she moved to Oregon when she was 10 years old. Maya wields her creativity and fierceness with everything she does. She is always unapologetically herself and ready to take on new challenges. When it comes to her art, Maya is always making bold statements, whether it is unconventional fashion or murals. When Maya is not listening to throwback jams or designing a new fashion line, she is exploring one of her many passions: working with children and helping her community. It is no surprise that one of the afternoon activities that she fell in love with was community service, where she has met some of her closest friends. She will miss the late-night drives blasting One Direction on her way back from community service as well as the on-campus dances such as the Welcome Back Dance. She is eager to get back to sunny California weather, when she attends Pitzer College in Claremont, California, where she will be exploring her love for Psychology.

Nothing holds her back. No matter what’s going on in her life she is always a big ball of joy to others and the most fun to be around.

With her radiant smile, long wavy hair, effortless style, and talent for dance, we are lucky to have been at Webb with Maya Gutierrez. She performed in every Winter Dance Show, her choreography recognizable by its pep and grace. Calling Mr. Szanyi’s funky, weird, and modern style of dance her “one true love,” Webb dance gave Maya space to grow out of the constraint of classical dance styles. Besides ending her eight-season career with the dance program, Maya will desperately miss her trio with her friends, Anjali and Manek. “It’s three peas in a pod. I feel like the true meaning of friendship is with us three,” Maya said. Her dedication to her friends and community was evident in her role as a prefect chair, where she took care of the Appleby dorm, helped plan the Halloween Happenings, and danced every morning at the loop during the Toy Drive. But in her much-needed downtime, Maya was probably binging Law and Order. Next year, Maya’s college career will begin at the University of Chicago, studying Global Health. Like many of Webb’s native Californians, she is nervous, but ready to face the cold.

Maya reminds me of a bee, even though she hates them, because she is cute, bubbly and zesty; she is super bright and lights up any room.

Megan radiates feline energy; she enjoys her alone time but is willing to open up once she gets to know you. At Webb, Megan fell in love with Advanced Studies Existentialism and Human Conditions, and, if you know Megan, you have probably heard her share her love for Dostoevsky. On the weekends, you can find Megan scouring bookstores and libraries for manga books by Naoki Urasawa or watching some of her favorite anime shows: Steins and Gate and Mushishi. Although Megan is excited to meet new people and explore her interests at college, she will miss all the little moments at Webb, whether it is eating lunch with her friends, winning a sports game, or simple conversations with teachers outside of class. During her time at Webb, Megan was a star volleyball and badminton player as well as an avid leader in the community through her role as a day student prefect. One of her favorite events on campus, which she happened to help plan, was Snow Day. Megan’s love for cold weather will come in handy as she is excited to escape the hot California weather at Amherst College in Massachusetts.

In some ways, Megan resembles the underground man, intellectual, introverted, and fairly amusing. However, as much as she would deny it, she’s also incredibly kind, always willing to say ‘hi,’ and she will never fail to give you the help that you need.

Mert Albeyoglu is a technology enthusiast, but he is not your typical introverted, tech-savvy teenage boy. Anyone who has met Mert knows he is one of the friendliest and most outgoing people here on campus. At Webb, Mert loved participating in varsity basketball, as it not only allowed him to bond with his teammates, but it was also his first time experiencing basketball in a different league than the one he played in Turkey. As president of the origami club, Mert used his leadership role to give back to the community and to meet new people. The Webb Admissions program even featured his club on Revisit Day, where he taught incoming students how to fold origami cranes. Next year, Mert will attend University College London and major in Computer Science. After participating in several internships specializing in computer science throughout high school, Mert hopes to pursue a career in artificial intelligence after graduating college. He promises to himself that he will always do his best to live by Eric Thomas’ quote, “To be able, at any moment, to sacrifice what you are for what you will become.” When Mert heads to London in the fall, he will miss the Alf Museum the most, and all the weekends he spent there, reading books and studying.

Mert may seem intimidating at first, but deep down he is friendly and caring. He never fails to make someone laugh; he just has a lighthearted nature that can really cheer you up. My favorite memory will always be screaming ‘Mertz’ at him and seeing him smile and laugh.

Born in Macau, raised in Mainland China, having traveled to 14 different countries (including Japan 10 times), Michael Su describes himself as not from one single place, but as sharing a connection with multiple cultures. Of all these cultures he explored, his favorite is Japanese culture. Not only does Michael love a hot bowl of hakata tonkotsu ramen, but he is also a huge fan of the Japanese lifestyle and anime, which led him to become the co-president of the Anime Club. It was in Japan where he picked up a camera for the first time, and since then, he has discovered his fervent passion for photography, documenting moments in life and telling unique stories through his pictures. During his free time, Michael loves blasting EDM music in the shower and playing Player Unknown’s Battlegrounds with his friends. While he regrets his terrible fashion choices during freshman year, he will miss his friends dearly when he heads off to Babson College. In the future, Michael wants to start his own travel agency while traveling the world, living by his favorite line from “High On Life” by Martin Garrix, “High on life till the day we die.”

My favorite memory with Michael is probably when Valera had to ban the entire dorm from playing music during shower because our ‘music festivals’ in shower stalls were so loud.

When Nicole Chen goes to college next year, Appleby dorm, Les Perry gym, and Kazama Sushi restaurant in Claremont Village will miss a familiar face. From coordinating the first virtual Jubilee as VWS dorm council chair, to rewriting all her college essays one week before the deadline, to starting her own nonprofit Heal (ED), when Nicole sets her mind on something, she is indomitable, and nothing can stop her. During her free time, Nicole made some of her best memories with her friends: building connections with Appleby residents, wandering around the Claremont Village, or smashing badminton birdies at open gym. Living by the quote “You have two lives, and the second one starts when you realize you only have one,” Nicole wishes to carry her “alpha” attitude and live life to the fullest. This fall, Nicole will leave her beloved hometown Shanghai and head to Northeastern University to study Business and Psychology. Boston, watch out, and be ready to catch Nicole on Forbes in 10 years!

Nicole is one of the few people that can go crazy with you at a party but also sit down and have deep talks. She may respond to texts once a week, but she is literally always one call away.

Need Netflix show recommendations? Want to engage in a hilariously deep conversation about nuanced character dynamics in Gilmore Girls? Nnenna Ochuru is the character-relationship expert to consult. Do not be intimidated, because the serious honor cabinet and chapel council leader also has a fun side. Whether being the only person to speak for a weirdly creative poem that no other Breakfast editors liked or laughing uncontrollably at some relentless comments while appreciating the diversity of perspectives, Nnenna brings the big-sister warmth and kindness to wherever she goes. Leaving her hometown Riverside, Nnenna will continue her pursuit for interdisciplinary learning and academic excellence at Cornell University, maybe finding her own true love (other than Jess Mariano) along the way. Soon, it will not be surprising to catch Nnenna in the nation’s top law school and find her face on CNN or the Politico front page, where she will dominate the White House, add a potent voice to the UN, or perhaps become a star in Germany’s legal arena, self-actualizing in a high-paced world, while always retaining her love for the simplicity in the countryside.

Maturing is realizing that Beck from Victorious was the toxic one not Jade.

Paige Woodard is a grandma at heart. From her knitting hobby to her cats (which have made frequent appearances in Zoom classes), Paige will make an excellent old lady one day. Until that day comes, however, Paige’s legacy, despite her grandmotherliness, tells the story of her energizing passion and work ethic—from the Gender/Sexuality Alliance, which she was co-president of for two years and is one of the things she is most proud of from her time at Webb, to the theatre department, where she put in four years of dedicated work in tech and found a community she loved. In between all that, the Southern California native spends her free time in the fine arts department office, with her family, or watching “Sex Education.” Paige has fond memories of her freshman year, including her first Homecoming and fall play, The Crucible. Her advice to her freshman self is, “The seniors aren’t scary, go talk to them!” Paige spends her summers at sleep-away science camps on Catalina Island, where she hopes to spend her life teaching grandparents-in-training in the future. Her many formative experiences at camp are leading her to major in Biology at Smith College next fall.

Paige just eats beats, like, raw beats, which is weird, I think, but go off.

Patrick Donez is going to be a farmer. At least, this summer, he will be. Eager to escape the endless and unsettling sprawl of the Inland Empire, Patrick is heading back to The Mountain School in rural Vermont, where he spent his spring semester of junior year, to join the summer farm crew. Being completely immersed in nature during his semester away solidified his long-standing passion for environmentalism. Some of his favorite memories were during the pandemic, when Patrick and his friends went hiking and camping from the mountains to the coast. On the drive, Patrick was likely listening to what he definitively calls his favorite band, Modest Mouse. Their powerful tracks and lyrics about how rapidly expanding suburbs are destroying nature inspire Patrick not only to play guitar, but to follow his gut. Hence, he is getting out of SoCal and heading up to Reed College in Oregon to study Environmental Studies. “I wanted to go to Reed because it felt like people were weird there in a way that’s different from where I live. I also just think it’s really beautiful there,” Patrick said. “I’m excited to live in Oregon.”

Patrick is very passionate about the finer things, like his black coffee. He says that it’s a personality trait to drink coffee black.

Peter Graf has a special connection with Webb’s paleontology program. From the afternoon museum activity to yearly peccary trips, he has put in much effort to reach his goal of becoming a paleontologist. Peter first met Dr. Farke, Curator of Paleontology and Director of Research & Collections, at a paleontology fest in his hometown Illinois. It was through Dr. Farke’s suggestion that he applied to Webb. When he is not immersed in the paleontology program, Peter is competing on the varsity wrestling team. He values the small but tight-knit team and the sense of community wrestling fosters, not just during the season but in all other aspects of Webb life. As Peter moves on from high school to further pursue paleontology programs in college, he will always remember Webb’s sense of community and passion. “Being at a place that actively encouraged and fostered paleontology has been just great,” Peter said. “I have made long-term relationships with people in many of the programs I’ve been in whether it be classes, sports, or afternoon activities.”

Peter’s compassion and kindheartedness represents a hidden part of Webb that oftentimes is obscured by academics. This is a community, and it is a willingness to serve with a generous spirit and with integrity. From Paleo to Wrestling, I think that Peter embodies these Webb values, and he is an unofficial leader for many of us.

Riya Patel is a star. Bright, resilient and passionate, her leadership skills have made her class vice president two years in a row, as well as an irreplaceable member of the South Asian Club. She has made a great addition to Webb’s JV tennis team and her artistic abilities granted her a place in the theatre tech crew and the honors arts program. Riya’s favorite Webb memories involve Tuesday nights with close friends and good food, as she waited for the evening science labs to start. Born in Michigan and raised in Claremont, Riya will be staying in California to pursue Business at University of California, Berkeley. There, with the other excited and passionate Bears, she will continue to explore the endless possibilities of the business world. It is impossible to know where she will be in five years, because she is not tied to a straight path to success. Life is impossible to predict, but Riya is confident and flexible, so wherever she ends up, she will be sure to shine!

She is always so honest about herself and what is happening around her… And she is always passionate about the things she likes to do.

Much like Reynolds, the dorm in which he served as a prefect, Roger Yen may seem mysterious or reserved. In reality, Roger is a caring soul and an advocate for the peaceful lifestyle. Roger was a light that brightened the dark corridors of Reynolds, his room the hub for late-night gaming sessions and Marvel marathons. On the volleyball court, he dominated as a WSC varsity volleyball starting setter. In the classroom, through banter with Mr. Caldwell, he discovered his interest in engineering, which he will be pursuing at Northwestern University next year. Although he appreciates the serenity of Claremont, Roger feels a natural propensity for metropolises like Chicago and his home Shanghai, which he calls “the best city in the world.” As he leaves Webb, Roger brings with him a lifelong appreciation for the people he met along the way and will always hold on to those he cares about.

Every once in 5 seconds, Roger’s internal maturity timer will run out, which will cause him to uncontrollably blurt out something absurdly stupid/childish. Though often not more than a single phrase (ex.” IM A FAKE DAWG”), it almost always cracks me up. I hope his new friends at college will appreciate his 3rd grade level humor and maturity as much as we do, and his random outbursts will be sincerely missed.

Although a day student from Claremont, Ryan Lin has spent most of his Webb career hanging out with his closest friends in the dorms. As a four-year varsity volleyball player, some of his favorite Webb memories include the bus rides to games and getting fast food with his teammates. Ryan has been an indispensable player on Webb’s varsity volleyball team, helping them win a league championship his sophomore year. In his free time, Ryan enjoys watching “BoJack Horseman” or listening to Kanye West. Although excited for “Graduation Day,” Ryan will miss the “Real Friends” he found at Webb and going to Mr. Dahler’s house with his advisory group, as Mr. Dahler liked to cook for them. Ryan may seem shy and reserved on the exterior, but he is excited to make new friends at college. He looks forward to escaping California and getting “Lost in the World” when he attends Oxford College in Georgia.

You could be thinking you are having a whole conversation with Ryan and then he just hits you with, ‘what?’ And then proceeds to stare at you until you tell him what you said.

Before every Evolutionarily Biology test, Dr. Beikmann always told Ryan Stacy’s block, “you will be fine,” a quote that Ryan referred to throughout his Webb career. Dr. Beikmann’s positivity, caring nature, and reassurance that everything was going to work out was proven to be true for Ryan. For as long as Ryan could remember, he wanted to be an architect, but when he realized how much geometry was part of that career path, he had a new dream: to work in business, following in his family’s footsteps. For four years, Ryan made his mark on the Webb campus whether he was scoring goals for the varsity soccer team or setting up drive-in movies as a day student prefect. Along with his friend Christian Arzate (‘21), he founded Gauls4Kids, a charity club that in one event fed over 700 people. Ryan will miss the connections with faculty he has formed and the conversations he has had. In five years, you can catch Ryan earning his master’s in Business while doing an internship or marketing job and simultaneously traveling and exploring Europe; possibly London in particular. Next year, Ryan will be leaving Glendora to head to Richmond, Virgina, where he will study Business at the University of Richmond.

When I first met Ryan, he was a thicc, bearded man who I initially assumed was my football coach. Then, I saw him in Foundations of Civilization in Freshman year. He may look like he’s 20 years older than everyone here, but don’t let that fool you. Ryan’s someone who I will be friends with for life, and anyone who gets to know him would agree with me in saying he’s a truly awesome guy and a great friend to have.

If you have been lucky enough to meet Santiago Noblin, you know that his caring, driven, and sarcastic personality sets him apart. Santiago’s sincerity and openheartedness can be felt by all who interact with him, whether you are discussing the latest Christopher Nolan film or exploring the complexities of human migration in Ms. Fisher’s class. Santiago is a natural leader on campus: his work as photography and publicity commissioner shines through in every StuGov Instagram post, and his motivating voice can be heard during every volleyball game. Santiago’s favorite Webb memory was dancing to Toxic by Britney Spears during Theme Nights his sophomore year. Santiago has a keen eye for design. He has been neck-deep in the digital arts since sixth grade, and his passion has further developed at Webb. He hopes to develop his talents at Syracuse University, where he will major in communication design. After Syracuse, Santiago plans to use his skills to develop a career in design that will allow him to touch the lives of anyone who encounters his work.

I thought he was a quiet art kid first, but he is actually a very loud, sarcastic mastermind.

If you ever find yourself in the weight room and need someone to spot you, Shane Albert is your man. Loyal, caring, and energetic, Shane is the type of guy who will go the extra mile for you without a second’s hesitation. Shane’s presence is perpetually felt on Chandler Field, where country music, the likes of Sweet Southern Spirit, rings out through the speakers during every baseball practice and before every game. Shane grew up around baseball and has been playing it since he was able to swing a bat. Shane’s natural habitat is the couch on the South side of Fawcett Library where he likes to relax with his friends. When not at Webb, Shane likes to spend time with his friends by hanging at Jake’s house and getting beaten at Ping-Pong. Shane is a devoted Star Wars fan and loves to watch Star Wars the Clone Wars, along with Revenge of the Sith. Shane was born in Upland, California, but after his Webb career comes to a close; he will be moving with his family to the Lone Star State to attend Lone Star College Montgomery, where he will be studying business.

Shane’s a very caring person. Hes always willing to the extra mile for one of his boys no matter the cause.

Thump. Thump. Thump. Smack! Shannon Uppal is on the court. Ever since the 6th grade, Shannon has dominated volleyball, whether club or varsity. However, when Shannon is not on the volleyball court, she’s most likely blasting Tongue Tied by Grouplove or talking to Chiara Filart (‘21) about why she eats pancakes with a spoon. Shannon is very ambitious and hardworking as she has taken on the role of Student Government Executive, and she is on the board of ESVI. Throughout Shannon’s Webb career, her all-time favorite Webb memory was when she was outside for a PA event as music was blasting on a speaker and she spilled bubbles all over the speaker, which caused Dr. Dzula to frown. Although a big cost to the peer advisors, looking back, she is glad she was able to learn from this experience, as it has long since become a funny memory. Shannon has made it her goal to go to medical school and become a neurologist after she finishes majoring in Health and Human Sciences at USC. Before attending medical school, Shannon plans on taking a gap year in Europe to travel the world before creating a legacy in the medical field.

Shannon is willing to try almost anything. She is super easy-going, and I can go to her with any of my problems. She’s crazy but I love it, everyone does.

Dedicated is too weak of a word to describe Sneha Jindal. Kind yet persistent, Sneha always succeeds in giving her all in the things she feels most passionate about. One such example is technical theatre, an afternoon activity she has done since freshman year, and now serves as crew chief and social media manager for her USITT-certified student chapter. She also leads and gives back to the Webb community through her role as a day student prefect. Perhaps her most prominent quality, Sneha embodies a social justice youth advocate, starting The Red Alert Initiative at Webb to promote social media activism. Sneha’s fascination with social justice has led her to major in Sociology when she moves to Pennsylvania to attend Haverford College in the fall. As she heads off for the next phase of her journey, Sneha will miss sitting outside the Price Dining Hall, one of her favorite spots on campus, and studying with her friends during lunch or after school. She will forever cherish Webb’s close community, which is like her second home, and appreciate the special relationships she has formed with her classmates and teachers throughout her four years here.

Sneha reminds me of a palm tree flowing in the wind. She is sturdy in her beliefs, a reliable friend, and a welcoming presence. But occasionally, out of nowhere, she will just let go of one of her leaves and smack an unsuspecting car driving up the road.

Sophia Scudder’s life is a beach — it is calm on some days and intense on others, but it never gets boring. From horseback riding to beach hangouts with friends, Sophia passes her days with a wide range of activities for a blissful lifestyle. Sophia also loves to challenge herself, whether through competing in dressage competitions, solving PBL questions in math class with Mr. Kalter, or asking someone for their Snapchat. She even participated in outdoor activities at Webb, where rock climbing and McDonald’s drive-thrus made for some of her best memories in high school. But one of her favorite things to do is sharing her vitality, especially by helping others. Her desire to follow in her mother’s footsteps and the curiosity of meeting all kinds of people influenced her decision to study Nursing at California State University Channel Islands in Camarillo, CA. When she graduates in five years, take a visit to a California beach where you might just see a nurse-in-training riding a horse down the coastline.

Sophia is the person who will never take your advice…and somehow always pull it off.

Stephen Li is well-known for his bubbling personality. It is hard to miss Stephen; He is consummately extroverted; the crowd is his muse. Always outperforming to show school spirit, he leads chants at sports games as the de facto “hype man” and lets his competitiveness out at Webb Idol and Theme Night. An athlete himself, Stephen played football in all three years of his eligibility on the offensive and defensive lines and was a captain his final year. He lives and plays by the saying “Tough times don’t last, tough people do.” Before joining as an international student from Beijing, he had never played football, but this attitude transformed him into a ferocious football mainstay, finishing his last season with 33 tackles, five TFLs, one sack and two recovered fumbles. For his efforts he garnered all-league 2nd team honors. He wears multiple other hats in the Webb community as a head peer advisor and the chief editor of media for The Webb Canyon Chronicle. It is in these roles where he enjoys larger world discussions. As a result, Chinese History and Journalism were some of his favorite courses, and he plans to nurture these interests when he goes to George Washington University next fall.

He was always someone who could get me hyped or get me locked in; he always had the mentality that it’s us versus them. I just hope he stops sending me shirtless pictures in the mirror at night.

Steve is keen on trying new things. Freshman year, he decided to try volleyball instead of playing tennis, a sport he is more skilled in from previous years of experience. Through Steve’s experience with volleyball, he developed a new appreciation for the sport, which allowed him to meet new friends, such as Charles Wu (‘21), who became one of his closest friends at Webb. Aside from volleyball, Steve likes to marathon episodes on Netflix or binge movies such as The Wolf of Wallstreet or The Hangover. Likewise, in his free time, you can find him watching television with his friends or playing volleyball. Steve believes that you should make the most of every moment, so it is fitting that he lives by the quote, “If you can’t avoid it, enjoy it.” Next year, Steve plans on studying Computer Science, Business, and possibly Biology when he attends the University of California, Berkeley. With a promising future ahead, Steve is going to miss his friends most when he leaves for college, but you can always catch him on the volleyball court or halfway through The Hangover 2.

My first impression of Steve was that he was unapologetically himself. He likes to try new things, and he is a genuine and hilarious person once you get to know him.

Throughout his time at Webb, Tony Gao has proven unstoppable when it comes to trying new things. This relentlessness drove him to become a distinguished percussionist in Webb’s Sinfonia, as well as an active player on two Webb athletic teams: both varsity tennis and JV soccer. Some of Tony’s favorite Webb memories involve cheering on Real Madrid in intense games with his friends, meeting new people at community dinner, and studying East Asia with Dr. Maxon. Next year, Tony plans to advance his studies at Franklin and Marshall College in Lancaster, Pennsylvania. In the historic New England city, he will continue to exercise his passion for history and politics to study the humanities and social sciences. He would like to expand his scope of knowledge as well as the depth of his abilities. In five years, you may be able to catch him advocating for the marginalized and helping those in need.

He is not afraid to speak his mind.

Tyler is an avid golfer. He has an easy-going approach to life and likes to breathe easy. This attitude is reflected in his various hobbies, as he enjoys reading in his free time, as well as gaming and hanging out with his friends Jacob Shigenaka (‘21), Gregory Tolmochow (‘21), and Jake Baiz (‘21). He believes you should take classes you know you can do well in to make your academic experience more enjoyable. His favorite faculty member is Mr. Rogers, and he has fond memories in his sophomore and junior years when his classes were filled with laughter and enthusiasm. On campus, Tyler’s most favored building was the Price Dining Hall because he grew to love the food and experience of eating with his friends. Next year, Tyler will be staying relatively local, when he attends Point Loma College in San Diego, where he will major in Business or Marketing and continue with golf. In the coming years, Tyler will maintain his laid-back approach to life at Point Loma, with plans on becoming a successful business, man like his father as continuing his appreciation for golf.

Once you get to know him, he’s one of the most chill, humble, and caring kids out there, especially towards his close friends. He’s always cool to have around and by your side; it could be just you and him, and you’d have a good time.

Having set her heart on going into the film industry, you might catch Victoria Gu at a future Oscar’s ceremony. However, before beginning her dream career, she sees herself in graduate school in five years, studying a topic related to filmmaking. Her love for the film industry may have started from her obsession with the sitcom “Ipartment,” a television series closely related to the 1994 television show “FRIENDS.” Her favorite activities and classes at Webb include community service, tennis, and Advanced Studies Modernist Literature, and hanging with her friends in the dorms and at Arcadia Mall, as well dancing at the Welcome Back Dance are some events Vicky will miss when she is off at college. One piece of advice she would give to both her freshman and future self, is to not procrastinate. Originally from Seattle, Washington, Victoria will be picking up and moving to New York City, where she will be majoring in Film and Television at New York University.

She’s a very carefree person, very genuine for sure and whenever we would hangout we would always just eat, talk and laugh.

Sharing almost the same name with the Vivian Webb School, she is an integral part of the Webb community. Determined, responsible, and intelligent, she has all the characteristics of a natural leader. Viven Xi is a queen bee. Whether it is taking charge as co-head of ISL or as Head Copy Editor of Journalism, this marks Vivien’s fourth year guiding Webb students to thrive in the community. Moreover, Vivien’s naturally inviting influence attracts everyone like a fresh-scented flower, each influenced by her easygoingness and ability to make you feel comfortable. On campus, you can catch her running laps on Chandler field or hear her hushed laughter from her dorm at 3 a.m. The varsity tennis team will undoubtedly send off an impressive player, and Vivien recollects blasting music and stopping for burgers after a long match. Haunted Halloween parties, binge watching movies with her roommate, and Mr. Jurczak’s unprompted life stories in AP Chemistry molded Vivien’s experience into a memorable one. Venturing away from Webb, Vivien is headed towards the buzzing city of Los Angeles, where she will be double majoring in Communications and Economics at UCLA. There, Vivien will cherish her time and seek out what more the world has to offer.

Wherever Vivien is, she is always the same person. Even if she isn’t feeling the best, she will always take a positive approach and talk to you about anything and everything, which is something I appreciate a lot.

As a freshman, Winston Li impulsively spent the $120 he had in bitcoin to buy a speaker that could produce 120 decibels. While this memory is one that Winston laughs at now, it highlights his spontaneous personality and absolute passion for good music, especially songs by Clairo, his favorite artist. During his time at Webb, Winston fully dedicated himself to the WSC water polo and swim team, leading the swim team as the captain his junior and senior years. He loves hanging out with his friends Matthew Gaw (‘21), Johnny Zhang (‘21), Roger Yen (‘21), Logan Zhang (‘21), Leo Cheng (‘21), Max Fargo (‘21), and Gregory Tolmochow (‘21); some of his favorite memories include blasting music in the Lower Jameson shower stalls and biking to the Claremont Village to get Jamba Juice. Winston will leave behind his identity as a Gaul to become a Johns Hopkins Blue Jay this fall. He is excited to go to school in Baltimore and explore the city, but he will miss his old friends at Webb and, even more, the dining hall coffee in the large dispensers. In five years, if you see a last-minute sign-up for the biathlon race in the 2026 Winter Olympics in Madrid, it might just be another one of Winston’s spontaneous decisions!

Though Winston may sometimes seem like a quiet person, he is actually very sensitive and caring. He can always sense when I’m stressed or sad about something and is there to comfort me. He is also an avid movie critic, and we have a lot of fun giving movie suggestions to each other.

Did you see that flash zooming down Gym Hill? Wyatt Andrews is known for speeding all around campus on his bike, wearing his signature black beanie. If he is not biking 13 miles daily, you can find him drawing and finding new music to add to his playlists. He likes to indulge in watching BoJack Horseman as a comfort show, exploring its deeper meaning. A funny quirk Wyatt has is that he uses his whole fist to draw, but according to his friends, he draws dinosaurs with astonishing expressiveness and detail. Art studio with Ms. Horejsi has inspired Wyatt to take on different challenges in art with technology as he improves all aspects of his work. He will be advancing his artistic talent at the Savannah College of Art and Design where he plans to major in Illustration Art for film, television, and games. Wyatt will miss his dorm room where he had his own personal freedom but is looking forward to the new changes to come.

We call him ‘Wyatt the dino-man drawer.’ He is just a memester obsessed with round frog memes. He’s never seen without his beanie. It’s basically a part of his skull.

A jack of all trades, Yiyi Ouyang can do just about anything. His talents have led him take on multiple leadership roles on campus. From the debate captain to being on Webb’s Honor Council, Yiyi does it all. However, his talents are not restricted to just school. Besides being a great speaker and leader, Yiyi is a fierce athlete and a notable musician playing both piano and cello. His athletic skills range from golf to basketball; his strengths are limitless! On top of all his accomplishments, Yiyi is known for being incredibly caring and affable. His friends enjoy having deep, late-night talks with him, especially in his natural habitat: his dorm room. He will miss the close-knit community Webb offers but is excited to explore new opportunities in the wider world once he graduates. After he finishes college, Yiyi is determined have a good internship that will ultimately lead to his future as a billionaire, and with his determination and skill, there is no doubt he will be the next Bill Gates.

We can do anything together. We once ordered 18 hot dogs to see who could eat more. I’ll remember the funny quirks he has though, like how his taste in music is very odd, and he’ll listen to 21 savage and be all over the place with it.
